Amnesia

ARABELLA’S POV

The already silent table seemed to still, and almost everyone lowered their eyes, as though looking up would get them killed.

While Alvise’s threat hung in the air, my eyes stayed fixed on Rashell, watching as she clamped her mouth/ shut, almost shaking like a leaf.

I’d never desperately wanted to hear what someone had to say like I did now, and for that reason, I lost my appetite.

I could feel Alvise’s eyes on me, sharp and observant, but I didn’t turn to look at him.

I wouldn’t.

Instead, I resumed eating even though the food tasted like cardboard, finishing the croissant on my plate before leaning back in my chair after gulping down another glass of orange juice.

Rashell cleared her throat. “I’m… sorry about my…”

“Enough!” Logvin interrupted her. “You’ve already upset the Pakhan. Just keep quiet for the rest of breakfast!”

“Yes, Mom!” Hedeon chimed in, glaring at his mother. “All that was unnecessary.”

Twirling a piece of my hair lazily, I ignored whatever drama the family in front of me was acting out.

Whatever Rashell said wasn’t a mistake.

I knew it wasn’t.

“No!” Rashell shook her head, turning to look at me. “Let me apologise to her…”

“Hold your apology,” I snapped, eyeing her warily. “I want none of it.”

Her face fell, and she stared at me in disbelief, her eyes almost bulging out of their sockets. “Dear… Don’t be…”

“I’m pretty sure you heard me, but if you didn’t, I’ll repeat myself.” I forced a smile and gritted out, “Save your apology.”

Her face fell again, and she looked away, biting her lips to hold in her retort.

She knew exactly what she did.

It wasn’t a mistake.

She thought it out, knew the repercussions, and even though I still didn’t know what exactly she’d intended to say, I knew it couldn’t be something I’d like to hear.

Rashell wanted to upset me.

Great. Because now, I was already upset.

Logvin cleared his throat, glancing at Alvise. “Pakhan… I…”

“You may leave,” Alvise ordered, the command and finality in his voice unmistakable.

Logvin pushed back his chair and pulled his wife up, his movements shaky and rushed.

“Pakhan…” Rashell trailed off, but her husband dragged her away before she could get another word out.

Hedeon rose from his chair, and his eyes landed on me. “Sorry about that,” he apologised, and then, to my surprise, he held out his hand.

I didn’t know what his intention was.

For me to place my hand in his so he could kiss it, or something else, but the man beside me didn’t let any of that happen.

Alvise stilled, placing the phone in his hand into his pocket and tapping a finger on the desk, the tension. emanating from him threatening.

“Get out. Now.”
