His Pov- Intelligence

ANVISE’S POV

I felt Arabella’s heartbeat racitig in her chest, like my words, spoken over her skin, were driving her insane.

Good.

I pulled back to look into her wide green eyes, watching the way they’d turn hooded and the red staining/ her cheeks.

I swiped my thumb over my jaw as it twitched, ignoring the bulge in my pants and the sudden need to eat her out again.

Fucking hell.

Arabella looked away, biting her lips so hard, I was certain it was going to bruise, and when she brought her eyes back to me, they were narrowed and hard.

“No,” she snapped, shaking her head. “I’ll have to pass.”

I took a step back and slipped my hands into my pockets.

“You have something to say,” I said, scraping my tongue over my teeth. “So say it.”

“What the fuck was Rashell talking about, Alvise?”

There.

I knew that was coming even before she opened her mouth.

Intelligence.

It came in different forms, and it was one of the most adequate ways to measure a person’s competence.

I’d come to understand that many humans lacked it, while others were just so ignorant, they didn’t care to acquire it.

Many people in the Bratva were on that list.

You see, they liked to assume being in possession of power automatically made a person smart and skilled, but that was the biggest lie they told themselves.

Or maybe one of the biggest lies.

And for me, the fastest way to spot a person that lacked intelligence was their big-ass mouth.

The urge to say all they knew, just to have a bit of leverage in a conversation that could end their lives.

I say all that to say Rashell Logvin was a big mouth, and I shouldn’t have brought Arabella to see the Logvins.

They were never supposed to meet.

Ever.

made a mistake, and I could accept that it was completely my miscalculation.

I wanted to test out a theory I had in mind, a possibility that I could take Arabella to a safehouse with them when the need eventually arose instead of making her stay in one alone.

That was ruled out.

Completely.

She brought up her daughter… she fucking brought up her daughter.

Arabella was never supposed to know her daughter existed. Those two worlds were never supposed to clash because the repercussions of that would be more dire than I had time to fucking deal with.

Arabella would never understand, and she wouldn’t be okay with my complicated history with Albina.

I’d assumed Rashell was a smart woman, that she would heed the warning I sent her husband and son when I extended the invitation, but apparently, she was anything but smart.

I wanted to kill her.

Right there, right then, after she almost said it all, but I had to control myself.

“I’m waiting,” Arabella hissed, pulling me back to the conversation.
