Bolder… At What Cost?

ARABELLA’S POV

Our gazes were locked, but he was staring right through me, not at me.

He was thinking about something else… Someone else.

Another memory… probably about the woman in question.

One.

His reply kept ringing in my head, over and over again, until I took another step back, turned around, and exited the closet.

I should be happy it was just one woman… right? But I wasn’t.

The fact that it was just one could mean he only liked one woman enough to go down on her.

I was certain he’d slept with other women before we got intimate, so that meant, out of all of them, he’d only taken that step with the unknown lady in question.

That meant something.

I’d never seen that look in his eyes. Worse, I couldn’t interpret it, and that was what irked me the most.

“Get it together,” I whispered under my breath as I headed for the bathroom, only to be stopped by a knock on the door.

“Who’s there?” I asked, walking towards it.

“Igor, madam… I apologise for the disturbance, but we forgot to bring your shopping bags up, so I’m here with them.”

I sighed, about to unlock the door, but the hairs on my nape stood on end, and I instantly knew Alvise was now in the bedroom, watching me.

I glanced down at myself, specifically at the towel strapped to my chest, and bit my lip.

He would hate to have me open the door looking like this.

And that was exactly why I unlocked the door and grabbed the doorknob, pulling it open, only for it to slam back shut immediately.

“What…” I yelped, looking up to see Alvise’s large hand on the door, pushing it shut.

“I know you want to piss me off, but I’d advise you to choose your battles carefully,” he warned coldly, so much anger seeping through his voice that I flinched.

The last thing I wanted to do was listen to him, but I could feel the tension emanating from him, and I wasn’t ready to be on the receiving end of his wrath.

At least not today.

I turned around, avoiding his eyes, and walked into the bathroom.

Had a long shower, brushed my teeth again, and tied a fresh towel around my waist before exiting the bathroom minutes later.

The bedroom was empty when I walked back in, and I released a sigh of relief, grateful that it was.

I ignored the shopping bags staring back at me and walked into the closet to change into a grey knit maxi dress before straightening my hair and letting it fall over my shoulders.

Because it was cold and my lips were getting dry, I applied lip gloss and walked back into the room.

I remembered shopping for perfumes from the store, so I finally searched through the bags and picked one out, spraying it before tossing it back with the rest.

The door opened suddenly, and I jumped in shock, biting my lip to stifle the light gasp hanging in my mouth.
