“Thank you,” I said, climbing into the car and dropping onto the leather seat with a stressed sigh.
Igor nodded, helping me bunch up my dress before shutting the door.
I stared straight ahead, not daring to look to the side because I was painfully aware that Alvise was still there, engaged in another conversation with some of his men.
“Get out of my face.”
Those were the words Alvise had thrown at me, his eyes so stoic and hard that I hadn’t even dared to say anything else.
I’d clamped my mouth shut and headed for the car immediately.
I probably looked completely pathetic because Igor had walked all the way from his spot to open the door for me even though I planned to do it myself.
Alvise believed I was involved.
I didn’t need him to say it out loud to know that.
It was simply the truth.
And I couldn’t even blame him.
All the available evidence pointed to me being the culprit, especially when I’d tried to run away before.
But the least I’d expected was for him to give me the benefit of the doubt.
The door suddenly opened, and I jumped in my seat, clutching my chest.
“Hi!” Rozaliya screeched as she slid in beside me and shut the door. “Wait… you look terrified.” She stared at me with wide eyes. “Did I scare you?”
I sighed, rubbing my chest as I shook my head. “No, you didn’t. I was just lost in thought.”
Her blue eyes, almost as piercing as her brother’s, narrowed. “Are you okay?”
“I am… yes. I am.”
“I heard what happened,” Rozaliya muttered, biting her lip.
“You heard?” I chuckled awkwardly. “Weren’t you at the same ball? I’m sure you witnessed everything for yourself.”
“Uhm…” She scratched the back of her neck, a faint blush staining her cheeks. “I wasn’t really at the ball.”
I raised a brow. “Then where were you… and why are you so flustered?”

She pulled her phone from her bag and waved me off dismissively. “I would have loved to share everything with you, but you’re my brother’s wife.” She glanced at me and shook her head. “You’ll tell it all to him.”
“No, I won’t,” I said, ignoring the pang in my chest at the mention of Alvise’s name. “He doesn’t do small talk. You know,”
“Since he knows we talk, he’ll want to get information out of you,” Rožaliya mumbled, glancing out the window as though checking to make sure Alvise was out of earshot before turning her attention back to me. “I was with my boyfriend.”
I shrugged. “Well, you’re an adult, so that’s not a problem.”
She scoffed. “In my family, it is. I’m betrothed to another man.”
I choked on air, struggling to catch my breath as I coughed. “What do you mean?” I asked once I’d recovered. “I thought people stopped doing that generations ago.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Rozaliya deadpanned. “It still happens. Literally every other day.”
“That’s absurd.”
“Well, everything in the Bratva is absurd. I’ve been betrothed since I was six,” she said, her nostrils flaring as anger flashed in her eyes.
“Is he at least your age?”
“Four years older.”
I cleared my throat before asking hesitantly, “You hate him, don’t you?”
Rozaliya pulled her lipstick from her bag and reapplied it. “I’ve never met him.”
“How’s that possible? You’ve been betrothed since you were six…”
“And I’m twenty-three now.” She patted her lips together, using her phone screen as a mirror as she wiped away the excess lip gloss. “It was arranged by our families, and we were supposed to get married a year ago, but…” Her voice faltered, as if she were forcing herself to swallow her anger. “He’s out of the country, and no one has heard a word from him.”
Why?
That was weird.
Confused, I asked, “Aren’t you supposed to be happy? At least that means you don’t have to marry a stranger.”
“I wish.” Rozaliya groaned, running her hands through her hair. “I’m stuck here, forced to ‘wait’ and ‘keep’ myself for a man who’s probably married with children.”
My face fell, an uncomfortable knot tightening in my stomach.
That was awful.

She was waiting for a man who probably didn’t even want to marry her.
What’s so unfair. And you can’t even marry someone else?”

She laughed, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “Marriage? I’m not even supposed to date someone else, or they’ll kill us.”
Wait a minute.
“But you just told me you were with your boyfriend!” I whispered, lowering my voice.
“Yes,” Rozaliya snorted. “The man has a death wish, and I couldn’t care less myself. I’m not waiting around for some man I’m not sure is even still alive.”
“And if he comes back?”
“He’ll also kill me after he discovers I’m no longer a virgin on our wedding night,” she muttered nonchalantly, blowing invisible dust from her nails.
Already worried for her, I placed my hand on her thigh. “Rozaliya… this is dangerous.”
“I know.” Her eyes dropped to my hand on her leg. “But I was born into danger, and I grew up around danger. I don’t give a f*ck.”
“Just… be careful…”
The door opened.
I snatched my hand back and immediately slammed my mouth shut as a pair of icy blue eyes came into
view.
Alvise leaned down, his face hard and unreadable.
“What are you doing here?”
His question was directed at his sister, his harsh gaze settling on her.
Rozaliya relaxed against the seat. “You drove me here, so it’s only right you drive me back, brother.”
“Get. Out.”
Her fingers flexed, and she tensed, turning to look at me.
She was a little afraid of him, even though she was putting on a brave front.
How could I tell her that I was too?
In this state, Alvise was terrifying.
“I… want her to stay with me,” I mumbled quietly.
His gaze shifted to me.
One brow lifted as he slowly stroked his chin, his expression turning thoughtful for a brief second.
