I Had A Tracker?
ARABELLA’S POV

I blinked, a shocked gasp escaping my lips when Miss Alonzo fell to the floor, her hands clasped together as she begged for Abeli’s life.
“Please, Pakhan,” she choked, tears trickling down her face. “Please, don’t kill him… please, I beg you.”
I heard murmurs and stifled gasps around us, so I turned, and that’s when it finally dawned on me.
The ball had come to a halt, and everyone’s attention was now on us.
The only thing that hadn’t stopped was the orchestra, their violins continuing to play, the sounds doing nothing but heightening the already unbearable tension.
“Please!”
I turned back to see Miss Alonzo clutching Alvise’s feet, her head bowed as she cried her eyes out.
Shit.
That escalated pretty quickly.
“Pakhan…” Danilo trailed off, his eyes fixed on the gun. “Please,” he gritted out, as if it hurt his pride to beg. “Don’t do this.”
Alvise scoffed. “If what I sought was melodrama, I would have joined my mother at her afternoon tea with her friends,” he spat. “So tell the girl you had shipped from Italy because of her father’s debt to you to get her slimy hands off my shoes.”
Miss Alonzo froze, her cries stopping abruptly.
So it was true.
She was shipped from Italy?
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Pakhan…”
Alvise lowered his gun to Danilo’s leg and pulled the trigger.
A loud bang tore through the air, blood spurting from his leg, most of it splattering across his fiancée before staining the marble floor.
“Shit!” Danilo yelled, collapsing to the floor and clutching his leg, his eyes squeezed shut as he struggled to hold back a scream.
I clutched my chest, trying to keep it together as my heart thundered against my ribs.
In the blink of an eye, we were surrounded by guards, most of them Alvise’s and the rest probably Danilo’s
men.
No one dared come forward.

“You were going to lie,” Alvise said, strapping his gun back into its holster. “And I didn’t feel like hearing it.”
Rakhan.”
I turned to see Andrei emerging from the group of men behind us and walking toward Alvise.
He said something in Russian, to which Alvise mercly nodded, and then Andrei stepped back, folding his arms behind him.
“Tell the crowd to disperse,” Alvise ordered, turning to look at Andrei. “Now.”
My fingers flexed at my sides as Andrei carried out Alvise’s order with some of the guards, sending people out of the large hall.
I wished to be one of them.
But I didn’t dare walk close to Alvise or try to speak to him.
I looked down to see Danilo still hissing in pain, blood pouring from his leg.
So much blood that I believed he was going to die right there on the spot.
“Pakhan…” a man from the troop of men behind Danilo called. “He’s losing blood… Please, give us permission to help…”
“Shut up and get out of my sight.”
“You heard him,” Andrei said, walking toward the middle-aged man who had spoken. “Leave.”
While the man was being escorted out, Alvise crouched down to Danilo’s eye level.
“You had the audacity to try to ‘help’ my wife escape?”
“No.” Danilo shook his head, his voice hard with pride despite his condition. “I had no idea you’d married her by then…”
“You still dared meddle in my affairs… as what? An honourable man?” Alvise chuckled, stroking his chin. “You wanted to ‘help’ her? Like you help all the women you shipped in and forced to work in your drug factory as slaves? Or the ones in your club as exotic dancers?”
Danilo’s eyes almost bulged out of their sockets. “Pakhan, I…”
“What? Tell me, which position were you going to offer my wife?”
Danilo shook his head, sweat forming on his forehead. “None, I…”
“And the tracker,” Alvise said, rising to his full height. “You gave her a tracker?”
I frowned, my palms turning sweaty as the words registered in my brain.
He gave me a tracker?
What tracker?

Before Danilo could respond, Alvise stepped back and glanced at his wristwatch. “I’ve had enough of this shit.” His eyes dropped to the floor, hard and narrowed as he glared at Danilo. “Be rest assured, we’ll finish this off some other time. Sooner than you think.”
And then he turned around, shoving his hands into his pockets and walking past his guards, who immediately made way for him.
My mouth hung open, goosebumps of shock rising on my skin, leaving me cold and stunned
“Madam?”
I snapped out of my daze and turned my head to the side to see Andrei approaching me. We’re leaving.”
I turned to look at Alvise’s retreating back, shaking my head. “I don’t think he wants me anywhere near him right now,” I said absentmindedly.
“That should be the least of your problems, madam,” he murmured under his breath. “The fact that you’re alive after putting his life at risk is a mystery.”
I glanced at Andrei. “What does that even mean? How did I put his life at risk?…”
“You had a tracker on you,” Andrei muttered, walking past me and nodding at Igor. “People have been killed for less.”
What the hell?
‘I didn’t take a tracker from anyone!’ I wanted to scream, but all I could do was groan inwardly and try to make sense of everything.
Nothing made sense.
Absolutely nothing.
“Let’s go, madam,” Igor said, pointing at the exit. “Boss is already pissed, and I would hate to be on the receiving end of his wrath today.”
Biting my lip hard, I walked out of the hall, ignoring the looks the guards shot me and letting Igor lead me out of the building.
Alvise stood with a group of men some feet away, and though I could barely hear them, the little I heard told me they were speaking in another language.
Not even Russian this time.
I stood patiently, shifting my weight from one foot to another until the conversation ended and the men finally walked away.
