I fought to keep my eyes on his face, but they drifted to his lips and I sucked in a breath before quickly looking back up.
“For… a trip?”
Alvise licked his lips and straightened, slipping a hand into his pocket. “Yes.”
Yes?
Why did he need to go on a trip, and why did I have to go with him?
He glanced at his wristwatch, turned around, and walked away so I shot to my feet.
“Wait!”
I hurried after him, grabbing his suit jacket to steady myself as I stepped in front of him.
“Are you going to work now?”
“I am. Why?”
“Nothing.” I shrugged, plastering a smile on my face. “Have a great day!”
Alvise studied my face, scraping his tongue over his teeth.
“You’re up to something, Arabella,” he said, sidestepping me. “And believe me, I’m going to find out.”
I turned on my heel, my heart skipping a beat as I watched him walk away.
Because he was right.
I was up to something.
I just hoped he never found out.
“What are you doing out here, madam?”
I twisted my fingers together and looked up to see Simeon approaching, his brows raised.
“Hi.” I swallowed, glancing at the rows of guards stationed around the property. “I need a favour.”
Simeon folded his hands behind his back. “What do you need help with, madam?”
“I want to see William… the man who was locked up here a few days ago.”
“A lot of people get locked up here every day, madam,” Simeon muttered. “You’ll have to be more specific.”
That was the last thing I wanted.

Being specific meant giving him more reasons to deny me access.

drew a deep breath and slowly exhaled. “I don’t know how to describe him. But I’ll recognize him when I see him.”
He shook his head. “I’m sorry, but even if you could describe him, I couldn’t let you see any of the prisoners. I’d get into trouble with the Pakhan, and that’s the last thing I want.”
My face fell, and I let my hands drop to my sides.
“I informed him about this ahead of time,” I lied, keeping my expression straight. “You won’t get into trouble.”
“Boss would’ve confirmed with us if you had, madam.”
“And what if he forgot?”
“Then I’ll call to confirm,” Simeon said, pulling his phone from his pocket.
My eyes widened in panic. “Wait… you don’t have to do that.”
His fingers paused over the screen. “Why? I need to confirm.”
I wanted to pull my hair out.
Why was it so difficult to see William?
I needed to speak to him as soon as possible and find out exactly what he’d done. If I didn’t, the mess he’d created could cost him his life.
And possibly mine, too.
“Please, I just need to see him and talk to him. Just for a minute.”
“I can’t help you with that, madam.”
“It’s an order,” I said, folding my arms. “You can’t get into trouble for following an order, but you can if you refuse one.”
Simeon’s jaw tightened. “But…”
“Do you want me to call my husband and tell him you’re refusing an order?”
He gritted his teeth, then shook his head. “No, madam. Follow me.”
Wait… that worked?
Still shocked that my little act had actually worked, I followed him as he led me toward a secluded wing of the property.
The guards stationed at the entrance looked startled when they saw us approaching. A few exchanged glances and muttered under their breath, but I ignored them and followed Simeon inside.
The place looked like a prison, but larger with thick walls and rows of cells, each secured with heavy iron

re we almost there?” I asked, growing increasingly uncomfortable as we walked deeper into the building.
Several men occupied the cells we passed.
Some looked up and began catcalling me, their disgusting remarks making my skin crawl.
I was going to be sick.
“Almost,” Simeon replied, leading me down a flight of stairs that appeared to descend into a basement
I swallowed my rising nerves and followed him down, the farther we went, the heavier the air seemed to
become.
Finally, we stopped in front of a cell.
“William!”
The moment I spotted him, I rushed toward the bars, desperate to get a better look at him.
William flinched at my voice and lifted his head, his mouth falling open when our eyes met.
He looked like a wreck.
Bruises covered his face, his lips were split, and his clothes were dirty and torn.
“Arabella?” He struggled to his feet and limped toward me. “You’re really here.”
Tears stung my eyes, bile rising in my throat as I took in the state he was in.
“Are… are you okay?”
He clearly wasn’t.
“I’m pulling through,” he said, managing a faint smile. “And you? Are you okay?”
I nodded quickly. “I am. I’m fine.”
My gaze flicked toward Simeon, and I bit my lip.
“Can you give us a moment?”
“I’m sorry, madam, but I have to remain here.”

“Fine,” I said, forcing myself to stay calm. “But at least stand a few feet away.”
Simeon hesitated, but when I stood my ground, he reluctantly took a couple of steps back.
“Arabella,” William whispered, drawing my attention back to him. “I hope that monster hasn’t hurt you.”
