My eyes collided with a pair of dark blue ones, and I immediately looked away, unable to withstand the intensity of his gaze.

“What the fuck are you doing here?”

The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end, prickling with both the awareness of his presence and the tension radiating off him.

I wanted to disappear.

“I came to see William,” I said, trying to sound calm, even though I was anything but..

“And when did I ever say you could do that?” Alvise asked, his voice icy cold as he stepped in front of me.

I dropped my gaze to the floor, biting my lip as the intensity of his stare became increasingly difficult to handle.

I shouldn’t have come here.

And I should have spoken to him about it first… But I knew he wouldn’t let me, so I had to take matters into my own hands.

“Look at me when I’m speaking to you, Arabella.”

I looked up, biting my lip. “You were going to say no if I’d asked you…”

“Because you have no business being in a place like this,” he snapped, his eyes flashing with rage. “Do you have any idea how badly things could have gone? How many men are waiting for an opportunity to break out of their cells?”

“I was going to leave right after speaking to him.”

Alvise slipped his hands into his pockets, his gaze shifting to William behind me.

“I made it clear that I didn’t want you to have anything to do with this fool.”

“I’m not a fool,” William sneered, slamming his hands against the bars. “And I want you to know that I’ll be out of here very soon, and when I am, I’ll put you in your place.”

I frowned, turning to glare at William.

He was going to get himself killed if he kept running his mouth like that.

“You talk a lot for someone who looks like shit,” Alvise said dryly, slipping his hand around my waist and pulling me against his side.

I looked up, letting out a shocked gasp. “I told you not to touch me…”

“You broke my rule, Arabella,” Alvise whispered, leaning down until I could smell his aftershave. “That

arrowed my eyes, glancing at Simeon, who was now leaning against the wall, then at the earpiece strapped to his ear.

How had I not noticed that before?

“You… you heard me talking to him! You knew I was going to come here,” I breathed, my eyes widening in shock.

The corner of Alvise’s lips lifted, a dark look of amusement crossing his face. “Yes, baby. I did.”

Despite my efforts to fight it, heat crept into my cheeks.

“You told him to let me come here… so you could use this as an excuse to touch me again?”

“I couldn’t help it,” he said, circling his thumb over my waist. “I like touching you.”

I glared at him, trying to wriggle out of his hold. “You’re twisted.”

All traces of amusement disappeared from Alvise’s face.

He tapped my waist one last time before withdrawing his hand and folding his hands at his back.

“What’s twisted is that you hid the truth about the tracker from me to protect that fool,” he muttered firmly, nodding towards William and stepping away from me.

Before I could say a word, he turned to Simeon, his shoulders tense.

“Escort her out.”

Alarm shot through me, and I hurried towards him, clutching his jacket. “What are you going to do to him?”

Alvise lowered his head until his lips were beside my ear. “You should be more worried about what I’ll do to you.”

I blinked. “Alvise…”

Simeon grabbed my hand, immediately pulling me away and all I could do was curse under my breath.

I paced the bedroom, glancing at the clock on the nightstand once again.

It had been almost an hour since I was escorted back to the mansion, and Alvise still wasn’t back.

I ran my hands through my hair and sighed.

I’d gone there hoping to save William, but I’d only ended up revealing everything.

The door suddenly opened, and I froze, my fingers twitching as Alvise’s familiar scent filled the room.

I turned around and rushed towards him. “Is he still alive?”

Alvise shrugged off his suit jacket, draping it over his shoulder as he met my gaze.

I clutched my chest, sighing in relief, but my relief was short-lived when Alvise stepped into my personal space, his jaw clenched.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I scoffed, raising a brow. “I told you I didn’t do it, and you didn’t believe me.”

“Because I found a tracker in your bag. If you’d told me you suspected that fool, I would have…”

“Then you would have believed me?” I turned away, walking towards the large windows. “The fact that you actually believed I would put your life at risk is alarming.”

I felt Alvise walk up to me.

“I just told you why it was difficult to believe you. All you had to do was tell me about his involvement, but you were protecting him.”

“Because I don’t want you to harm him,” I said, turning around to face him. “But you figured it out all on your own, haven’t you?”

Alvise took a step forward, his blue eyes narrowing. “And you’re mad about that, aren’t you?”

A pang shot through my heart, and I sighed. “You’re going to kill him.”

“Definitely. But not now.”

Bile rose to my throat, and I struggled to push it down.

I wasn’t going to let him go through with it.

Never.

He leaned down and rested his forehead against mine.

“Do you know how much weight has been lifted off my shoulders?”

I took a deep breath but refused to respond.
