Rozaliya stood there for several seconds, not saying a word, letting Alvise’s words hang in the air until the heavy silence became uncomfortable and I itched to break it.
He did it.
Her fiancé?
“Thank you,” Rozaliya whispered, pulling me out of my thoughts, then she turned around and headed back into her room.
I blinked, surprised, but before I could even think of going after her, I heard the lock click.
A tense breath escaped me, and I sighed, tracing my nails over Alvise’s card, which was still firmly trapped in my palm.
I felt him move, his shiny black shoes coming into view as he stepped into my personal space, filling the air around me with his familiar scent.
Slowly, I looked up, sucking in a deep breath as my eyes locked with his.
“Are you okay?” he asked, searching my face.
I nodded, biting my lip. “I’m fine… just worried about your sister,” I said, grabbing his suit jacket and tugging him closer.
Alvise swiped a thumb across his lip, tilting his head to the side.
“She told you she had a boyfriend, and you kept it from me.”
I knew that was coming.
“She didn’t want you to know.”
“Do you know how messed up what she did is?” he asked, his jaw hardening. “She’s put herself in far more trouble than she’ll ever be able to handle.”
“I know…” I whispered, shaking my head. “When she told me about it, I got scared for her. But please, Alvise… take it easy on her now. After losing her boyfriend…”
“That fool dying is the least of her problems, Arabella,” Alvise said, his voice hard at the edges.
My chest tightened, and I dropped my hands from his jacket, my mind becoming a messy pool of thoughts about Rozaliya’s situation.
“When you said, ‘he did it… you meant her fiancé, right?”
Alvise nodded. “Yes.”
I narrowed my eyes. “Who is he?”

“Caspian Leonti,” he muttered, glancing at his wristwatch, a dark edge creeping into his voice as he said the
name.
I frowned. “Is that all you’re telling me? A name? What am I supposed to do with it?” I gave him a blank look. “I know nothing about him…”
“And I don’t want you to,” he cut me off, grabbing my wrist and leading me away. “Don’t get yourself involved.”
He was right.
I shouldn’t get myself involved.
But how was I supposed to get everything off my mind? Rozaliya and I had grown quite close over the past few days, so it was hard to watch her struggle and do nothing about it.
The saddest part was that there was nothing I could do, no matter how much I wanted to help her.
Alvise led me to our room, his grip on my wrist firm and unyielding, never loosening until we walked inside and he shut the door behind us.
“Are you upset with me?” I asked, moving to stand in front of him.
He unclasped his wristwatch, his eyes fixed on me. “And what if I am?”
I raised a brow, tossing his card onto the bed before grabbing his collar. “But I just told you why I kept the truth from you.”
He tossed his wristwatch onto the vanity and undid his cufflinks. “I want you to tell me everything.”
“But you don’t tell me everything,” I said, huffing out an annoyed breath. “You barely even tell me anything.”
“Enlighten me.”
I let my hands trail from his collar down to his shirt, skimming my fingers over his buttons.
“There’s still so much about you that I barely know,” I said, giving him a pointed look. “And that’s unfair.”
Alvise raised a brow, a muscle in his jaw ticking. “Unfair?”
“You know almost everything about me, Alvise.”
“Almost,” he repeated with a nod, the corner of his lips lifting. “I don’t like the sound of that.”
I knew what he was doing.
He was trying to steer the conversation away from the topic.
Rolling my eyes, I took a step back, about to walk away from him when I spotted his busted knuckles again.
I hissed. “Alvise… you’re hurt.” I grabbed his wrist, examining his injured hand with a frown. “This looks like it hurts.”

He tensed under my touch, his muscles contracting, but he didn’t say a word.

Wordlessly, I tugged him toward the bathroom, leading him to the sink and after rinsing both of his bruised knuckles with water, I hurried to grab the first-aid kit.
He got hurt because of me.
Butterflies fluttered in my stomach as the memory of him punching his father for disrespecting me flashed through my mind again. The way he’d reacted without hesitation, putting his hands on his own father because of what he’d said to me, sent a strange warmth spreading through my chest.
Opening the first-aid kit, I flushed, heat rising to my cheeks. “Thank you.”
I looked up to find his blue eyes already fixed on me, bright and unnervingly intense.
“What are you thanking me for?” he asked, his accent rolling off his tongue and sending a chill down my spine.
“You defended me,” I mumbled, approaching him with the ointment and applicator in my hands.
Suddenly, Alvise grabbed my waist and hoisted me up, setting me on the counter before stepping between my legs.
I gasped. “What are you doing?”
“What does it look like I’m doing?” he asked smugly, his voice lazy at the edges.
“I just want to apply ointment to your wound…”
“I didn’t say otherwise, baby.”
“But…” Heat flooded my cheeks as I glanced down at our compromising position, his large hands resting on my thighs.
He knew exactly what he was doing.
As always.
