A bitter taste settled on my tongue, the air in my lungs suddenly feeling suffocating as my hands slipped from Rozaliya’s shoulders.
The shock of her words was so overwhelming that my knees nearly gave way.
“What… how?” I whispered, my voice trembling and lips quivering. “How is he dead?”
Rozaliya didn’t respond.
She stared blankly at the wall, her eyes refusing to meet mine.
“Tell me, who was that, and what did they say…”
“Did you tell my brother about my relationship?”
My face fell.
I shook my head immediately. “No. I never did,” I muttered. “I never even mentioned it to him.”
Her eyes slowly met mine, a look of betrayal simmering in them. “Then how did this happen? You’re the only one I spoke to about him, and now he’s been shot dead in his own home.”
“I… don’t know. I would never betray you like this. You didn’t even tell me his name, so how could I have possibly done this?”
Rozaliya paced around the room, looking defeated and broken. “My brother is the Pakhan. There is nothing he cannot find out.”
“But…”
She stormed out of the room before I could get another word out.
Shit.
She was going to confront Alvise.
I ran after her, my heart thundering and so many thoughts swirling in my head as I rushed down the stairs, trying to catch up with Rozaliya’s quick pace.
“Brother!”
I halted.
Alvise was standing in front of our room, about to head inside.
Slowly, he turned to look at her… then at me, raising a brow. “What?”
“You killed him!” Rozaliya accused, approaching him. “Why did you kill him?”

I held my breath as Alvise turned fully towards her, tilting his head to the side.

Never spoke a word about her relationship to him.
Not even once.
There was no way he’d done it… unless he’d gotten the information from someone else.
“If you’re going to walk up to me and talk about whatever the fuck you’re yapping about, you have to be specific,” he stated firmly.
“My boyfriend…” Rozaliya rubbed her chest, pressing her fingers against it. “You had him killed.”
Alvise’s jaw hardened, his eyes darkening. “You had a boyfriend?”
Shit.
Rozaliya stilled, her shoulders tensing. “You’re… lying. You’re just trying to pretend…”
“You had a fucking boyfriend?” He swiped his thumb over his lips, the veins on the back of his hand protruding, giving me a clear view of his busted knuckles. “I’m giving you exactly five seconds to tell me what the hell is going on.”
Rozaliya glanced at me, her expression falling as it finally dawned on her that I had never told him anything.
She’d outed herself to him.
Alvise followed her gaze to me, a muscle ticking in his jaw. “You knew about this.”
It was a statement, not a question.
He was pissed.
Slowly, I approached them, refusing to let my nerves show.
“Alvise, I…”
“You knew she had a boyfriend, Arabella,” he seethed, chuckling darkly. “And you didn’t fucking tell me?”
“Alvise, she just lost her boyfriend,” I muttered, my voice steady. “We can talk about this later.”
He didn’t look pleased to hear those words.
“So… you didn’t kill him?” Rozaliya asked absentmindedly, her voice so low it seemed like she was asking herself.
“I would have if I knew you had one,” Alvise said dryly, the anger in his voice unmistakable.
“Alvise,” I said, stepping into his personal space and placing my hands on his chest. “I know you’re upset… and you have every right to be,” I said softly, “but someone just killed her boyfriend, and your reaction isn’t helping.”
“She was never supposed to have one in the first place.”

“I know, but… she’s your sister. At least try finding out what happened. Whoever did this to him probably wants to harm her too.”
Alise tensed under my touch, pure irritation on his face.
He couldn’t care less.
“What’s the fool’s name?” he asked, pulling his phone from his pocket.
I moved to stand beside Rozaliya, who still stood there, shocked and barely present.
“Artem… Artem Vladimir,” she whispered, her gaze fixed on the floor.
Alvise’s expression darkened at the name.
“Vladimir’s son? That’s who you risked your life for?” He scoffed, dialing a number and walking away to make a phone call.
“Breathe,” I said, rubbing my hands over Rozaliya’s shoulders.
She wasn’t crying, and she didn’t look like she would, but she was stoic, as though the news had shocked her so much that she couldn’t do anything but stand still as a rock.
“My phone…” she muttered suddenly, rushing towards the flight of stairs leading to her floor.
I followed her into her room, watching as she rushed to pick up her phone and typed frantically.
“What are you doing?”
“I need to delete all my conversations with Artem.”
I frowned. “But he’s already dead.”
