Let’s Leave

ARABELLA’S POV

Abandoning my breakfast, I followed Alvise up the stairs and toward our room.

The door was half-open, and I shut it behind me after walking in, searching the room for any sig of him.

It was empty.

Frowning, I walked into the closet, finally spotting him zipping up his suitcase.

“Alvise?”

He looked up, his piercing eyes finding mine instantly.

I walked toward him, glancing down at his suitcase on the console table before flicking my eyes back up.

“Why are we suddenly leaving for this…” I trailed off, unsure of what it really was. “…trip?” I asked, confused.

“There’s nothing sudden about this, Arabella,” he said, picking up the suitcase and placing it on the floor. “I told you about it over two days ago.”

“I know, but…”

“And I asked you to pack, didn’t I?”

I nodded. “Yes… but why do we have to leave now? You didn’t tell me it was going to be this morning.”

“I planned to tell you yesterday, but…” His eyes trailed to my body, and a muscle ticked in his jaw. “I got distracted.”

Before I could stop it, my face warmed at the memory of how we’d spent our afternoon, and I cleared my throat. “But still… is everything okay?”

I had a feeling it wasn’t.

He was as calm as always, but there was a sense of urgency and impatience in his actions today, and I found it unusual.

Alvise slid his hand into his pocket and tilted his head to the side. “Why are you asking that? You don’t trust me?”

“Of course I do…”

“Then no more questions, Arabella,” he said firmly, glancing at his wristwatch. “Where’s your suitcase?”

I sighed, giving up.

For now.

“It’s…” I pointed to the top of a shelf. “…right there.”

“How did you get it up there?” Alvise asked, a look of dark amusement in his eyes as he walked to the shel and effortlessly brought my suitcase down.

I gasped. “Are you implying that I’m short? I’m actually pretty tall.”

He glanced at me, looking me up and down as though verifying my claims, then wordlessly rolled our suitcases out of the closet.

“And? You’re not saying anything?” I huffed, following behind him.

“What do you want me to say?” Alvise asked dryly, walking toward the nightstand.

“That I’m tall! I know I am.”

He swiped his thumb across his lips, his eyes glinting as they landed on me.

“You’re okay.”

I rolled my eyes, picking up my phone from the bed before walking back into the closet to grab a bag and slip on my white kitten heels.

“I packed only one suitcase because I don’t know how long we’ll stay or where we’re going,” I mumbled, walking back into the room. “Is that fine?”

“It doesn’t matter,” Alvise muttered, his eyes fixed on his phone as he typed away. “You can shop for more if you need to.”

The room fell silent, and I stood awkwardly, replaying the morning’s events in my head.

One thing was perfectly clear.

He didn’t want to tell me where we were headed.

“That reminds me,” I whispered under my breath, brushing past him to the nightstand and pulling his debit card out of the drawer where I’d safely placed it. “I’ll be needing this.””

“Are you done?” Alvise’s deep voice filled the room, making me turn to look at him,

His eyes bored into mine as he watched me, as though he could see everything I was thinking, while I couldn’t read a single thing on his face.

“I am,” I hummed.

Rolling both our suitcases, Alvise opened the door and walked out, with me trailing behind him.

“Will they come with us?” I asked, pointing at the guards stationed by the door.

“They won’t.”

I didn’t say another word after that.

We made our way downstairs, but before we could reach the door, Rozaliya rushed toward me.

“Arabella!”

I halted, turning to see her approaching from the dining table, her brows knitted together. “You’re going, on a trip?”

I sighed, glancing at her brother. “Apparently.”

“Brother,” Rozaliya whispered, walking up to Alvise. “Can I speak to her in private?”

Alvise stroked his chin, his tightening jaw giving away the fact that he didn’t want that, but to my surprise, he nodded at me.

“If she’s fine with it, then you can.”

Rozaliya’s anxious blue eyes landed on me, and I smiled. “Yes, of course,” I said, walking over to take her hand. “You can.”

I let her lead me to the kitchen, a place I’d never been to since I stepped foot into the Valerio house.

It was huge and very organized, but I didn’t have time to look around because something about Rozaliya’s body language told me she wasn’t okay.

“Are you okay?” I asked, my face giving away my worry.

She rubbed her hands over her elbows. “When will you be back?”

“I… I don’t know yet. Your brother hasn’t said anything.” I moved closer to her. “You look troubled.”
