Rozaliya slammed her mouth shut, her eyes widening as Alvise’s impatient voice filled the kitchen,
I turned around, plastering a smile on my face. “Oh… okay.”
Alvise raised a brow, suspicion written across his face as he looked between us.
“What are you two talking about?”
“Nothing,” Rozaliya answered before I could, moving to stand in front of him. “Nothing/important
Alvise’s eyes landed on me, and he glanced at his wristwatch. “It’s time to go.”
“Sure,” I said, walking towards him. “I’m right behind you.”
Alvise stroked his chin, looking between us again before turning around.
“Now, Arabella. Now,” he instructed before walking away.
I quickly pulled out my phone from my bag and held it out to Rozaliya. “Here. Put in your phone number.”
She took the phone and typed in her number. “Go on now. He’s already suspecting that something’s up.”
“Take care of yourself, and I promise to text and call as often as I can,” I assured her. “See you when I get back.”
Something passed through Rozaliya’s eyes, and she hesitated before answering. “See you.”
As I walked away, a troubling feeling settled in my chest, a knot forming in my stomach.
Something wasn’t right.
“I’m starving.”
Alvise looked up from his phone, turning to face me with a brow raised.
“You didn’t have breakfast?” he asked, slipping his phone into his pocket.
“I was about to before you approached me and made me abandon it.” I scoffed, folding my arms.
“And why are you just telling me this now?” he asked, scraping his tongue over his teeth, his eyes devoid of
amusement.
He was right.
There was no use complaining now.
We were already in the car, with his guards driving in front of us and behind us as usual.

But he was still the reason I’d missed breakfast.
linked, frowning at him. “Would you have waited for me to eat if I’d told you to?”
“Yes.”
“I highly doubt it. You didn’t even give Rozaliya and me a chance to talk!”

don’t like it.”
I squinted. “Like what?”
“Whatever you have going on with my sister,” he said dryly, his voice hard at the edges.
“Why? She’s your sister, not a stranger.”
“It makes no difference.”
I huffed, turning to face the road. “I don’t see how me speaking to her affects you, to be honest.”
“You kept her relationship from me,” he retorted, irritation simmering in his voice.
I turned sharply towards him. “Well, because it’s hers, not yours. Why would I tell you?”
Alvise’s eyes hardened, the muscles on the back of his hand protruding as he tapped a finger against the leather seat. “She could be killed for dating while being betrothed.”
My stomach sank as Rozaliya’s words from the night of Danilo Abeli’s ball came back to me.
She knew the consequences, but she didn’t care.
And I completely understood why. She was tired of being caged and expected to keep herself for a man she’d never even seen.
“But you won’t let that happen, will you?”
Alvise looked away. “Let what happen?”
He knew exactly what I meant, but I said it anyway. “You won’t let her get killed… right?”
Alvise pulled his phone from his pocket, dismissing the conversation. “I don’t bend the rules for anyone.”
There was no trace of emotion in his words, but I could tell that a part of him, no matter how small, didn’t want Rozaliya dead either.
Alvise said something in Russian, breaking me out of my thoughts and suddenly, the car stopped.
My brows drew together as I turned to look out the window.
We were outside a restaurant.
I smiled, turning to look at Alvise. “You’re stopping for me?”

“Of course I am,” he said, opening the door and stepping out of the car,

been sure he wasn’t going to stop because he kept glancing at his wristwatch, as though he had a set time he was trying to meet up with.
My door opened, and I stepped out of the car, thanking Igor and flashing him a polite smile before going to stand beside Alvise.
“There’s no time for you to eat here, so I’ll get takeout,” Alvise said, glancing at me and studying mye. “Is that fine?”
I nodded, biting my lip. “Yeah.”
“Wait here,” he instructed before heading into the restaurant.
I watched his retreating back until he was out of sight, then leaned against the car, wiggling my toes as I stared at my kitten heels.
Movement in my peripheral vision caught my attention, and I turned, a bitter taste settling in my mouth as a familiar face, concealed behind dark sunglasses, came into view.
“She looks familiar,” I muttered under my breath, squinting.
Then it clicked.
Rashell.
What the hell was she doing here?
My blood ran cold as I stared at her, remembering that she was Albina’s mother.
