Ruined By My Brother’s Best Friend

He’s Here. Again?

falways been convinced that Leah’s hatred for me ran deeper than her dislike for Sierra, but I just didn’t know how deep it was. Until now. As we glared at each other, a harsh retort on the tip of my tongue, I was convinced that she would willingly throw me into the sea if she had the chance.

“Why?” I snapped, irritated.

“Because I can…” Leah leaned back and pushed her hands off the desk. “I want to…” She turned around and walked toward’s the opened door. Then looking over her shoulder with a smug smirk of triumph on her lips, she whispered. “And I have.”

As I leaned back, watching her retreating form as she exited the office, I wanted nothing more than to throw my bag at her. I couldn’t, so I just clenched my fists at my sides and groaned in frustration.

“What was that about?” Sierra asking, prompting me to glance at her. “Why did you want me on the team instead?”

I exhaled, “I don’t want to torture myself any further by being close to Alvise,” I whispered weakly.

“Oh… And I thought this would be the perfect opportunity for you both to get close to each other.” Sierra said, her voice hopefull.

“Are you serious?” I asked in disbelief. “Have you forgotten that the man is engaged?”

She shrugged. “And I keep saying never say never.”

I shook my head. “You don’t understand.” She really didn’t. My relationship with Alvise was far more complicated than anyone could comprehend. Even I didn’t understand it. “Even if he wasn’t engaged, we’d never work out.” Not if Francesca was still alive and not if Alvise still considered me dead to him.

Sierra searched my face with her eyes, a concerned look marking her features, “What really happened, Ella?”

“Nothing worth talking about,” I said calmly. With a forced smile, I breathed out, “Let’s get back to work.”

He got out of the car and disappeared into the restaurant, only to return some minutes later with packed takeaway food bags. Once he got into the car, my mouth watered and my stomach growled embarrassingly as the smell of the food gulfed the car.

As usual, he put the bags at the back seat and started the car, driving off again. I waited for sometime before I reached for a, bag from the backseat and started eating. It was one of my favorites, fried rice and dumplings. A part of me wondered how he knew that, but I concluded it was just a coincidence. Once I was done, I grabbed a bottle of water and drank it halfway to my satisfaction before packing up everything and sealing it back in the bag.

Alvise remained quiet and didn’t say a word as he drove calmly till we were in front of my apartment building. I reached for the door handle, but hesitated, a question I’d been meaning to ask him on my mind. Before I could talk myself out of it 1/ turned back to him and blurted it out, “Why are you still in London?”

I regretted it the moment it left my mouth. His hands tightened on the steering and I watched his body/tense vividly. The air suddenly felt thick and uncomfortable and I wanted nothing more than to disappear.

My breathing stilled the moment he turned to face me, his eyes blank and void of any emotion. “What did you say?”/

I now wondered why I even asked him that to begin with. It wasn’t necessary, I should have just kept my mouth shut. “I… 1 asked why you’re…” I trailed of, contemplating if it was worth finishing my sentence as I watched a muscle in his jaw tick. Suppressing the urge to look away, I swallowed hard and finished what I started. “…still in London.”

Alvise held my gaze, his eyes hard as he watched me carefully. I was almost sure he was going to dismiss me until he decided to shatter my word. Again. “I have work to finish before my wedding.”
