A Mess

always been used to getting my heart broken. So used to the ache in my heart that not even my tears could compare to my bleeding heart. But even then, I could say that pain seemed little compared to what I felt in this moment as-l/stared into the familiar depths of those intense blue eyes.

My face fell, my lips almost quivering as my breathing turned irregular, the weight of his words feeling like a slap across my face. I should say something, confirm that I’d heard him and that my question had been answered. But I don’t. I can’t.

Turning my face away from him, I reached for the door handle and pulled the door open. I could feel the weight of his gaze on me, never straying for even a second as I walked toward my apartment building. I never turned back, not even when got into the elevator with a couple who lived on the same floor as I did. I could feel their judgmental gazes on me, probably wondering why I was standing with my back to the door.

I snapped out of my daze the moment the doors opened again, then turned around and made my way to my apartment. After unlocking it, I stepped inside, locked the door behind me, then headed into my bedroom. The moment I got in. I le the tears spill from my eyes as a painful sob escaped me..

I crouched down, hugging my legs to my chest, my eyes closed as I replayed his words over and over again. I was hurting. I was hurting so much, and I wanted nothing more than to soothe the ache in my chest, but I couldn’t. I just couldn’t because the only person who could was the one who broke me in the first place.

“Girl! Where the hell are you?”

I winced, scrunching up my nose before yelling back into the phone, “I’m coming! Stop yelling!”

I put on my earrings, then slipped into the most comfortable pair of work shoes I owned, which was essentially just my white slip-on heels. I was late for work because I’d only fallen asleep after crying myself to sleep.

If Sierra hadn’t called me relentlessly, I would’ve still been curled up on my carpet with dried tears all over my face. My life was pathetic. Even I could admit that.

“You expect me to stop yelling when Leah literally just came in here to ask where you are?” Sierra sneered, basically screaming into the phone.

“Oh my!” I rolled my eyes, running my comb through my hair as I attempted to slick it back with hair gel. “You’re not making me panic at all. Thank you, sweetheart,” I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm.

Sierra groaned in frustration. “You better get your ass here as soon as possible!” she warned before ending the call.

I smoothed out my black, short-sleeved, knee-length work dress, sprayed on my perfume, grabbed my bag, then rushed out, locking the door behind me. Luckily, the ride I’d called arrived early, so I got into the car and rushed to work.

Sprinting through the lobby and toward my office, I was almost panting when I suddenly ran into someone. “I’m so sorry!” 1 mumbled, taking a few steps back and steadying myself.

“Is this the time you’re supposed to come to work?” Leah snapped, her voice laced with bitterness and anger.

“Thank you so much for calling me, Sierra! I owe you one!” I said, thanking her before turning my attention back to my computer, which I’d just turned on, and submitting my edit.

“Why are you in such a rush?” Sierra asked as she typed away on her computer.

I sighed and got up, grabbing my bag from the desk. “The team formed for the merger has a meeting in the conference room.”

Sierra gasped, covering her mouth as she stared at me with wide eyes. “Fuck! I forgot you were part of the team too.” She smacked her palm against her forehead. “How did it slip my mind?”

I was walking toward the door but paused in the middle of the room. “Not you being dramatic.” I chuckled lightly. “I was already late anyway. Besides, I bumped into Leah, and she told me about the meeting.”

“Yeah, but… everyone looked quite tense, and management made it clear that lateness won’t be tolerated,” Sierra informed me, her face full of worry.

“It’s fine,” I assured her. “I’ll just plead with the host to pardon me.”

“About that…” Sierra bit her lip. “I think Kade is the host.”
