Ruined By My Brother’s Best Friend

A baby…?

ARABELLA’S POV

“P… pregnant?” I choked out, the air in my lungs constricting as though I’d suddenly forgotten how to breathe.

I needed air.

I sidestepped Alvise, walking towards the large windows and taking a deep breath, my fingers flexing nervously by sides

I could feel his eyes on me, but even then, I still couldn’t pretend the news hadn’t taken me by surprise.

I’d known in my gut that I might not like whatever the truth about Alvise and Albina’s relationship was, but nothing could have prepared me for this.

“S… sorry about that,” I breathed, finally turning around after catching my breath. “You… can continue.”

Alvise slid both hands into his pockets, scraping his tongue over his teeth. “You don’t look like you want me to.”

I cleared my throat, rubbing my now-damp hands over my dress. “I do… I was just a little shocked.”

He wasn’t buying it.

He watched me quietly, searching my face as though he were looking for the truth in it.

I played it cool, flashing him a weak smile because even though the thought of what he was going to say next scared me, I still really wanted to know.

“What happened after she told you she was pregnant?” I asked, urging him to continue.

Alvise slid his hands out of his pockets and tapped his wristwatch, glancing at the screen before looking back up at me.

“I was pissed,” he muttered, shaking his head. “Extremely. Sleeping with her had already been a mistake, one I’d tried to pretend I hadn’t made, and then she showed up at the house with a pregnancy test.”

Slowly, I walked towards him, stopping only a few feet away.

“Since we were betrothed, I’d always known we were going to get married eventually, but I was still looking for a way out of it.” He scoffed, his jaw hardening. “And she must have known that too, because getting pregnant meant I’d be forced to go through with it. It was a messy situation, and I hated it. I was young… not ready to be a father or get married. I never wanted any of those things.”

I bit my lip, holding Alvise’s gaze as he slid a hand around my waist and pulled me closer to him.

Despite his words, he was eerily calm, not a flicker of unease evident in his expression.

I could see the darkness in his eyes, deep and dangerously terrifying, and it made goosebumps rise on my skin, sending a shudder through me.

“I asked Albina how it was possible she’d gotten pregnant when she’d practically begged me not to use protection and swore she was on birth control. And even then, I hadn’t taken her word for it. I got her a morning-after pill the next morning, so how the hell had she still gotten pregnant?” A dark look crossed his face, the veins in his jaw protruding as he clenched his teeth. “It didn’t make sense, so I came to one conclusion.”

He stared right into my eyes, his gaze flashing with something unreadable.

“She lied.”

I wasn’t surprised.

er meeting Rashell and seeing just how unhinged she was, it didn’t take much to guess that she wanted her daughter yo bepme Alvise’s wife by any means necessary.

As for Albina?

I didn’t know much about her.

I’d only met her once, and though that meeting had still rubbed me the wrong way, it wasn’t enough for me to say anything definite about her character.

However… from everything Alvise had been telling me, it was safe to say she was her mother’s daughter.

Literally.

Alvise circled his thumb over my waist before continuing. “I confronted her about it and made it clear that her lying and obviously scheming to get pregnant had done nothing but make me even more determined not to marry her.”

He tensed against me, his touch suddenly feeling like fire burning into my skin.

To lighten the already thick air between us, I asked, “How did she take that?”

After all the effort she’d gone through to get pregnant, I was certain there was no way she would like the idea of her efforts going to waste.

Alvise swiped his thumb over his lip, the veins on the back of his hand protruding as he did so.

He opened his mouth to speak, but a knock sounded on the door, cutting him off.

“Really? Now?” I scoffed, stepping to the side and running my hands through my hair.

“Easy, baby. Why are you impatient?” Alvise muttered, walking towards the door.

Because I know there’s every chance you might refuse to continue if you get distracted.

Of course, I didn’t say that out loud.

I simply sat at the foot of the bed, crossing my ankles and waiting to see who was at the door.

Alvise pulled it open, revealing Igor and another guard standing outside with our suitcases.

He took the suitcases from them and brought them inside, but before he could shut the door, Igor spoke.

“Pakhan… can I have a word?” he asked, scratching the back of his head.

I bit my inner cheek hard, groaning inwardly.

Of course, this had to happen now.

Why now?

As if he could sense my frustration, Alvise turned back, dark amusement glinting in his eyes as he looked at me.

“Is it important?” he asked, looking back at Igor.

“Yes, it’s about…”

I couldn’t follow the rest of his words because he switched to Russian, making my brows shoot up.
