ANVISE’S POV

Arabella gasped, stumbling back a step and almost losing her footing.

I grabbed her arm and pulled her against my chest to steady her, taking a deep breath as I caught a whiff of her shampoo.

The same one I was involuntarily addicted to.

Emphasis on involuntary.

I was doing things I would previously have rather buried myself six feet underground than do, all for her.

Here I was, recounting a memory I wanted nothing to do with, acting like a fucking storyteller for my wife when things back in Russia were quite evidently on the verge of exploding if I didn’t put everyone in check.

“She tried to…” Arabella shook her head, pulling me out of my thoughts. “That’s insane.”

It was.

Albina was insane.

“Obviously, she survived,” I said, ready to get the topic over with. “But the baby didn’t.”

“Wait…” My wife stepped away from me, rubbing her hands over her elbows. “If she really wanted to be with you and went as far as trying to trap you with the baby, why would she take such a risk?”

She was yet to realise that there were so many whys surrounding that incident… but only a few had definite answers.

I folded my hands behind my back. “Albina never planned on going through with it,” I said, my hands balling into fists at the memory. “She only planned to threaten me and guilt-trip me into marrying her.”

Arabella frowned, squinting her green eyes as she pressed her lips together. “Okay, but then… what happened?”

“She bought pills that were only meant to make her dizzy and faint, but someone switched them with the real thing.”

“So someone tried to kill her and the…” Arabella trailed off, walking to the windows, her fingers trembling as she clutched

the rim.

Like I’d repeatedly said before, I’d grown up amongst wolves.

It sounded like an exaggeration, but it was, in fact, the opposite.

Heartless. Soulless. You name it.

But I barely had the right to be offended or even dare to think about the out-of-the-ordinary things that happened around me because my soul had been equally dark.

Still was.

The only difference? I recognised that there had to be limits to how dark a person’s heart could be.

I did back then… but was that the case now?

Definitely not.

“Do you know who it was?” Arabella asked, turning around to look at me.

I did.

kept pretending I didn’t, or else I would lose the last shred of sanity I had left.

My hands travelled to hers, finding her fingers trembling slightly by her sides.

It reminded me of how mine had shaken when I’d locked myself in my dark room and stood for hours, staring at fothing in particular after receiving the news.

I’d wondered why Albina would be so desperate and stupid, and I’d despised her for it.

Probably still did.

But what had really managed to get under my skin was the innocent baby caught in the middle of it all.

Even though I’d been pissed about the situation and everyone involved, I could recognise that the baby had been innocent… and it had still been mine.

Even if I hadn’t wanted it because of Albina’s deceit.

“Alvise?”

Dainty fingers wrapped around mine, and I snapped out of whatever thought I’d been trapped in to find Arabella standing in front of me, clutching my hands.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, rubbing her thumb over the back of my hand.

Sorry?

“Why would you be sorry?” I asked, tensing beneath her touch.

She furrowed her brows. “You… lost…”

“You’re showing more emotion than I did, Arabella,” I said, my voice hard at the edges. “That should tell you that I have no soul.”

She wrapped her hands around my torso, pressing herself further against me. “I know you well enough to know that you did,” she whispered, searching my face. “And you still do, but you’re bottling it all up… because you hate that you actually

cared.”

I averted my eyes from hers, scraping my tongue over my teeth.

Was she right?

Probably.

But the day I allowed myself to dwell on why I’d cared about any of it for longer than necessary hadn’t come yet.

And hopefully, it never would.

Gently, I pulled her hands away from my torso, leaning down and brushing my lips against hers. “I need to go and see Igor downstairs now, baby.”

She bit her lip before rising onto her tiptoes and kissing me on the cheek. “I know this was hard for you, and now you’d probably rather be alone.” She wrapped her hands around my neck and kissed me on the lips. “So I’ll let you be. But… thank you for sharing this with me and…”

Arabella hugged me.

lood frozen, barely moving throughout the entirety of it until she finally pulled away, her cheeks stained red. “I’ll be here to hug you whenever you want.”

I swiped my thumb over my lips, watching her for several seconds before stepping into her personal space and pressing my lips to her forehead.

And then I turned around and exited the room.

I didn’t deserve her.
