Doesn’t Impress Me

“I’m in Paris for a ‘honeymoon, but here I am, stuck in the hotel room while my supposed husband is God knows where,” I hissed under my breath, sitting up on the bed.

It had been hours.

Several hours since Alvise had left the room, and he still wasn’t back.

It was already almost midnight, and though I’d showered and changed into a free dress hours ago, thinking he was going to return with some food, it was becoming painfully clear that wasn’t happening.

Without thinking, I fished Alvise’s debit card and my phone out of my bag, grabbed the key card from the table, and walked out of the room, shutting the door behind me.

I was going to get some food.

Taking the elevator to the first floor, I met the receptionist in the lobby, and she directed me to the hotel restaurant, where finally had my dinner.

A very late dinner.

After paying with Alvise’s card, I headed to the lounge area, and since it offered a nice view, I decided to sit there for a while.

“I never imagined running into a pretty girl today.”

I sighed, slowly turning around to see the man staring down at me.

He had light hair and sharp green eyes that felt almost invasive as he held my gaze and moved to sit beside me on the couch.

“I don’t believe I know you,” I muttered, scooting away to put some distance between us.

He chuckled. “I believe you don’t, but that’s why I stopped to say hi,” he said, holding out his hand. “My name is Jacques, and you are?”

I looked down at his outstretched hand, then back at him.

I wasn’t trying to be rude or stuck-up.

Genuinely.

But, like I’d stressed before, I’d had my fair share of creepy encounters with strangers, many of which had almost led me to an early grave, so I wasn’t about to start taking chances now.

“Lucia,” I lied, smiling politely before looking away.

“I apologize if I’m making you uncomfortable,” Jacques mumbled. “But after seeing you, I just couldn’t walk away.”

I kept my attention on the phone in my hands, scrolling through nothing in particular as I pretended not to hear him.

It was more for his own benefit than mine.

Two of Alvise’s guards were currently watching me, though they were dressed normally and blended in well with other guests.

I’d missed them too and hadn’t suspected a thing initially, but I started finding it strange that the two of them seemed to be following me everywhere.

u seem to have zoned out. I was saying you’re really attractive…”

I turned to look at Jacques, smiling politely. “Thank you for the compliment, but I’m married,” I said, showing him my ring finger.

He waved his hand dismissively. “Ah, the classic excuse.”

“I’m being serious,” I said dryly.

“Even if you were, I believe you deserve someone way better,” he said confidently, clasping his hands together and shaking them abnormally.

I frowned, wondering what was wrong with him until I realized he was deliberately trying to give me a clear view of his Rolex.

I smiled, shaking my head.

Was that supposed to impress me? Alvise wore a different one every other day.

“What man would leave a lady as pretty as you alone in the city of love?” Jacques continued, staring me right in the eye. “He doesn’t deserve you.”

I raised a brow in disbelief.

It felt like I was stuck in a scene from a cringe-worthy TV show, and I hated every second of it.

“And you believe you do?”

He nodded, giving me a blank look as though I were the one who’d lost my mind. “Of course.”

I chuckled, genuinely tickled by the situation and his sheer confidence, my eyes welling with tears as my shoulders shook with laughter.

As I sobered up and shook my head, I was about to turn my attention back to my phone when goosebumps rose on my skin, my body suddenly tensing.

I looked straight towards the entrance.

He was back.

Angry blue eyes pierced my soul as Alvise stalked towards me, with Igor following behind him. He looked like sin itself in his dark suit, his hands tucked into his pockets.

People moved out of his way, some even seeming compelled to greet him as he passed.

But he didn’t respond, his eyes never straying from me.

I swallowed.

“Leave,” I whispered.

Not getting the message, Jacques stayed rooted beside me. “What was that? I didn’t quite catch it.”

I wanted to pull my hair out. “I said, leave…”

Alvise stopped in front of me, towering over me as his eyes searched my face. “What are you doing down here?”

I smiled, crossing my ankles and craning my head back to get a proper look at him.

ell, hello to you too.”

Ignoring my snappy retort, he looked beside me, his eyes moving over every inch of Jacques’ body before trailing pack to me, as though he were calculating the exact distance between us.

A muscle ticked in his jaw.

“Who the fuck is he?”

I rose to my feet, clearing my throat. “I have no idea…”

Alvise was no longer looking at me. “Who are you?”
