I stared at the screen for longer than I wanted to before sliding the damn phone into my pocket and stepping into my car.

Like I’d said, I hated dealing with bullshit.

It unnerved me.

As if I didn’t already have enough unnecessary things on my plate, some stupid fool had decided to add something else to the list.

Perfect.

Igor stepped into the front seat and looked back at me. “Straight to the warehouse, Pakhan?”

“Yes,” I said, glancing at my wristwatch. “Make it fast.”

Igor nodded. “Okay, boss.”

When I’d decided to come on this trip with Arabella, I’d never intended for it to be entirely about work, but with these new developments, it seemed like that was inevitable.

I pulled my phone out of my pocket again as Igor started the engine.

I stared at the screen, reading the text over and over until I had a list of suspects in mind.

I had more than a list.

I had a whole damn textbook.

And as much as Archie getting kidnapped had been unforeseen, I wasn’t going to pretend he hadn’t brought it upon himself.

The fool had left London with absolutely no idea that he was walking straight into the lion’s den.

Unprotected.

It was different for Arabella.

She was my wife and under my direct protection. No one had the right to try to harm her unless they had a death wish. It was the law, and even though that wouldn’t stop most cold-blooded criminals from trying to get to her, it established one undeniable fact: going after her wasn’t going to be easy.

That wasn’t the case for Archie.

So, he had it coming.

Especially after the ruckus he’d caused at the airport, marching up to the security officials and showing them a picture of Arabella.

He’d reported her missing upon arrival, claiming that he feared for his sister’s life.

And when the security officials told him off because news had obviously spread among them that Arabella was my wife, he refused to leave.

I’d known he’d do something stupid.

My guess had been that he’d get locked up before midnight, but as things stood, the situation was far worse.

didn’t know anyone in Russia… Well, that was what I was still allowing myself to believe.

I wasn’t going to give him the benefit of the doubt until I was absolutely certain he wasn’t getting help from one of y

enemies.

“Pakhan,” Igor muttered, clearing his throat and breaking the perfectly tolerable silence in the car.

“What?”

There was a long pause before he spoke again. “Can I speak freely, sir?”

I raised my head, finding him already looking at me through the rear-view mirror before he quickly turned his attention back to the road.

I didn’t have time for this shit.

However, I responded. “Speak.”

“Do you… think Caspian Leonti will show up himself… at the warehouse?”

I stroked my chin, tapping my foot against the floor.

Of course, I didn’t.

He wasn’t stupid.

If he dared show his face in front of me after what he’d done, I was certainly going to forget all the damn rules and kill him.

“He overstepped several boundaries,” I said to Igor, my fingers flexing. “Including killing a made man on our soil after being away for years.” I scoffed. “He’d be stupid to show up himself.”

“I believe so too, Pakhan. He’d probably send his right-hand man.”

“You seem intrigued by the concept,” I stated, tapping a finger against the leather seat. “I wonder why that is.”

Igor’s hands trembled slightly on the steering wheel. “No… I was just curious after hearing some of the men talking about it.”

Done with the conversation, I scraped my tongue over my teeth. “Make sure that curiosity doesn’t get you into trouble.”

Igor slammed his mouth shut after that, and I was able to sit in silence until he finally pulled to a stop in front of the old warehouse.

I loved old warehouses.

The older they were, the more you could get away with… And this wasn’t just peculiar to business.

They also served as the perfect correctional spots for men who got too drunk on the little power they’d been privileged to have.

I’d gotten away with countless dealings, and I was ready to add another one in Paris.

Too bad Caspian wasn’t honouring the invitation himself.

I got out of the car and headed straight for the warehouse, my men following close behind. Some fell in line around the property while the others followed me inside.

“That’s one dusty door,” I muttered, kicking it open and walking into the large space.

It was definitely cleaner than the exterior suggested.

ooked around, my eyes sweeping over every inch of the space.

It was empty.

“Benedict?” I called, irritation stirring within me as I searched for one of my guards.

The one who’d set up the meeting place and time..

Benedict rushed forward, bowing his head. “Yes, Pakhan.”

I folded my hands behind my back. “Where’s the fool Leonti sent?”

“He’s not here…”

“So he’s late?”

“I think so, Pakhan…”

“I don’t tolerate lateness. And I certainly don’t wait for anyone,” I said, turning around and walking out of the warehouse.

Benedict hurried after me, the other guards trailing behind him. “Pakhan… what if he shows up?”

I glanced at my wristwatch.

He was already over ten minutes late, and I didn’t have time to waste on tardy men.

I’d left a certain green-eyed woman in the hotel room to drive all the way here, and now my time had been wasted.

I headed towards the car and opened the door. “Kill him.”

Without waiting for a response, I got into the car and picked up my phone.

I typed out a text, about to send it to Andrei, when my phone rang, making me pause.

Another call from an unsaved number.

It wasn’t unusual, though. I got those a lot.

I swiped to answer and pressed the phone to my ear.

“Alvise Valerio. It’s been a while.”

I stroked my chin. “I would have asked who had the audacity to call me by my name, but only a dead man walking would have such audacity,” I said, tilting my head to the side. “Caspian Leonti. Did your right-hand man get lost on his way to the warehouse?”
