She waved a hand dismissively. “Oh, please. I try.”
Done with the conversation, I greeted Archie’s other friends, ignored Francesca’s friends, then leaned back on the couch and draped a blanket over my legs. In front of me were several snacks. Most of them were my favorites, and/1.didn’t have to think hard to know Archie had gone out of his way to make sure I was comfortable.
Oh, I loved my brother.
“Alright, everyone, let’s begin,” Archie announced before turning off the lights just as everyone settled back into their seats
The movie soon started playing, and I leaned back, getting comfortable. It was a horror movie. I loved horror movies. So, o course, I gave it my full attention.
But that only lasted a few minutes before someone dropped into the empty space beside me, startling me and ruining my comfort.
The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end, my body sparking with tiny jolts of electricity the moment our legs brushed, even though mine was covered by a blanket and his, yes, it was a man, were covered by his black pants.
My mood soured, and I suddenly had no interest in the movie even though I was staring straight at the TV. A large part of my discomfort had to do with the person occupying the space beside me.
I knew it was him.
Even before he sat down, his scent had announced his presence, putting my body on alert. I knew he was in the room from the moment the air shifted and people turned their attention to watch him walk in, as though his presence alone was more important than the reason for the gathering.
“I’m not watching the movie. Not yet,” he said flatly.
My eyes widened as realization dawned on me. I’d blurted out my thoughts.
Refusing to look embarrassed, even though I was, I scoffed and tipped my chin up. “Scoot away. You’re taking up all the space.”
He didn’t reply immediately, so I turned back to the TV and tried to focus, but my efforts were shattered when he finally spoke, his voice deep and raspy. “I want to take up the space.”
