Sierra nodded, a wide grin spreading across her face. “What the hell?” She stood and walked toward my desk. “That means Alvise asked her to add you back.”

pok my head. “No… why do you think it was him?”

She gave me a flat look. “Because he’s literally the boss. Duh. And he heads the project.”

“But…” I breathed, my nerves getting the best of me. It couldn’t be possible, right? Alvise added me back. Why?

Sierra grabbed my shoulders and shook me lightly. “Girl, he really asked her to add you back! Don’t overthink it.”

I nodded. “But… why?” I asked. “He… he never goes back on his word.” And I would know because I’d heard Archie say that before.

“And do you know the craziest part?” Sierra asked excitedly. “I think he also told her to inform you about the meeting ahead of time!”

I furrowed my brows. “Wait… do you think so?”

“Yes!” Sierra said. “Because that’s the only reason she’d mention it. Leah would never have told you otherwise.” She gritted her teeth. “She loves setting you up.”

I sat frozen in my chair, still in a daze, before Sierra pulled me to my feet.

“She said the meeting starts in thirty minutes, right? Girl, you have to get there now.” She shoved my notepad and purse into my hands and pushed me toward the door. “We’re not taking any chances today.”

I laughed and hit her on the shoulder. “You’re actually crazy.”

She ignored me, a serious expression on her face as she ran her hands through my hair, fluffing it out. “Good. Now get your ass to that conference room.”

I turned around. “You’re honestly dramatic,” I threw over my shoulder before walking out and heading for the conference

room.

I pulled the door open and came to a halt as I took in the sight that greeted me.

Alvise sat in a chair at the head of the table, his eyes trained on the files in front of him. Behind him stood what looked like guards, dressed in black suits.

I peeled my gaze away from the guards and turned my attention back to Alvise. He was in a navy suit, one that only seemed to make his eyes stand out even more.

As if sensing my presence, he glanced up, his eyes clashing with mine. My pulse raced, my palms turning sweaty as my nerves spiked under the heat of his attention. I’d walked out on him last time, so I didn’t know how to act.

He glanced at his wristwatch, his face stoic, though a hint of amusement danced in his eyes. “You’re twenty-three minutes 1 early today.”

Heat rose to my cheeks as I took another step into the room. “I don’t want someone to kick me out again.”

“Ah, lesson learned, I see,” he said, leaning back in his chair, his cool accent making my head fuzzy.

Ignoring my racing heart, I attempted to sit several chairs away from him. He shook his head, prompting me to pause abruptly.

Then, as though his guards knew exactly what he was thinking; one of them pointed to the chair right beside him.

Shit.

nked, every thought vanishing from my head as I watched the large guard pull out the chair for me.

“I… You…” I trailed off, lost for words.

He didn’t reply. Instead, he picked up his pen and turned his attention back to the files.

The guard looked as though his patience was wearing thin, so I quickly closed the distance and sat in the chair he’d pulled out for me, my hands almost trembling.

From the corner of my eye, f could see him completely focused on the files, his brows drawing together whenever he came across something he didn’t like. I was almost intoxicated by his presence, despite my mind screaming at me to get it together. His scent, his face, his build, his hair, his accent, his voice… Everything about him demanded my attention.

I sighed, frustrated by my own distraction. Puffing out a breath, I reached for my notepad on the table. I wanted to look busy, but I quickly realized I had no idea where the team was in the project.

I finally allowed myself to glance at him. “Um… what are you doing?”

He raised a brow but didn’t look up. “Working.”

I cleared my throat, clasping my hands together beneath the table. “I know… but on what?”

His attention never wavered. “The project.”

I let out another breath, annoyed, and instead of pressing further, I leaned back in my chair and sat quietly.

“You don’t know what the project is about,” he said with such certainty that it sounded more like a statement than a question.

“You kicked me out, remember? Of course I have no idea what the project is about,” I said with a shrug. My eyes widened as another question suddenly popped into my head. “Did you ask Miss Leah to add me back to the team?” I blurted, sitting up straighter.

His eyes met mine, those blue depths studying me intently before he looked away. “Yes.”

One simple word, yet it made my stomach churn, conflicting emotions rising within me. On one hand, I was relieved and grateful that he’d added me back. On the other, I still held a grudge over the way he’d treated me.

Like I’d said before, he was the devil, because as if he’d heard my thoughts, he looked up again, held my gaze for a second longer, then signed the document in front of him. “You’re still upset.”

My foot tapped restlessly against the floor as I tried to stop my body from betraying my thoughts. Did he add me back because I was upset?

Before I could ask what I was thinking, people began filing into the conference room one by one, filling the empty chairs. He closed the files in front of him just as a few people I assumed worked for his company placed more documents before him and spoke quietly. I couldn’t understand a word they were saying even though I was seated so close. They were speaking Russian, and he never responded. At that moment, I realized I’d never actually heard him speak in his native tongue.

“That’s my seat.” The voice from behind me made me turn in my chair.

Leah’s narrowed eyes darkened. “Mr. Horald isn’t able to attend, so I’ll be sitting there.”

I grabbed my notepad and moved to stand, but Alvise’s voice stopped me. “Stay,” he said, not even glancing at either of us.

I swallowed, uncomfortable with the attention the little scene had drawn, but I leaned back and remained seated.

Mumbling under her breath, Leah scurried off to another chair, a deep scowl etched across her face.
