Ruined By My Brother’s Best Friend

Don’t Go

I couldn’t breathe. My chest heaved with so much anxiety that I almost physically lost it.

I never expected him to actually ask me about it. I left… It was my fault.

Alvise was staring at me, his face so stoic I almost believed I’d hallucinated his question. But I knew I hadn’t.

I heard it loud and clear… The only thing was, I couldn’t give him an answer.

“I…” I took a deep breath, smoothing my damp hands over my sweatpants. “Um…” My words failed me.

A muscle in his jaw ticked before he looked away. I sat frozen in place as he picked up his phone and walked toward the door.

Panic surged through me, and I rose to my feet, hurrying after him. I didn’t know why, but a part of me felt that if I let him walk away like this, it was over. I just didn’t know what. We didn’t have any kind of relationship. We weren’t even friends. But I just knew…

I couldn’t let him go.

His shoulders tensed as I stopped right in front of him. His intense eyes narrowed, not a trace of warmth on his face.

“Where… where are you going?” I asked quietly.

“Move,” he said, no edge of anger in his voice, just calm.

Somehow, that scared me even more. “I’m sorry,” I breathed, not even sure what I was apologizing for. There were too many things. “I’m so sorry…”

He tilted his head, staring right through me. “Why are you apologizing?”

My face fell. “B… because…”

“To apologize, you ought to have done something I give a shit about, correct?” He took a step closer, engulfing me in his scent. Then he lowered his head, his nose brushing mine as he stared straight into my eyes. “I don’t give a shit.”

I gasped, the intensity of his words and his closeness overwhelming me. “Alvise…”

“Don’t.” He cut me off, his eyes so hard and bitter that I instinctively took a step back.

I could see it. The hatred. It was so overwhelming that I physically couldn’t stand to be in front of him. I didn’t want to be pathetic. I tried to hold back the tears, but they refused to stay put. I turned my head away and wiped my eyes. “I’m s…”

“If that’s another apology, you might as well take it to your grave.” He snapped, his tone so sharp and cold that I flinched.

He closed the distance between us again, his fingers gripping my chin as he forced me to look at him. “You will never ask me another question,” he warned. “Not about work, my life, or even the fucking weather.” His grip tightened. “Do you understand?”

I opened my mouth, but no words came out. He leaned in closer. “Answer me. Do you fucking understand?”

I nodded, another tear slipping down my cheek.

Alvise released my chin and stepped back. “Get out of my face.”.

I complied, stepping out of his way, a choked sob escaping my throat.

Without another glance in my direction, he unlocked the door and stormed out, leaving me standing in a silence that judged me so harshly I almost broke down.

I locked the door and walked to my room, not bothering to turn off the TV as I crawled into bed and sat there, staring into the distance.

The rain intensified, the wind hurling it against the windows while thunder cracked so loudly I almost flinched. But I was too stunned to even move.

The knowledge that he preferred to drive through a thunderstorm than stay another second with me hurt more than his words ever could. Sniffing, I wiped my tears and lay back on the bed, my eyes fixed on the ceiling.

As I closed my eyes, I came to the realization that if I’d stayed away from him that night, none of this would’ve happened. Maybe Francesca was right after all.

I didn’t deserve him.

“You look like shit,” Sierra commented as I walked into the office.

“Trust me, I know,” I said, walking to my desk and taking a seat.

She raised her brows. “Why do you look like you barely slept a wink?”

“I did try to sleep. Try being the key word,” I said, dropping my purse onto the desk and turning on my computer.

She sighed. “Is something wrong?”

Where was I supposed to start? Everything was wrong… But I wasn’t going to mope about my life anymore. I’d said that countless times before, only to end up doing the exact same thing. countless

Maybe the hundred-and-fifth time would be the charm. I was pathetic.

“No,” I said, smiling widely. “Life’s great.”

“Hmm…” She eyed me warily. “I bet it is.”

I could feel her lingering stare as I went through my unfinished projects and buried myself in work.

After a while, Sierra asked, “This has something to do with Alvise, doesn’t it?”

I bit my lip, glancing at her. “Do you remember when I made you promise never to say his name four years ago?”

She nodded. “Clear as day.”

I clasped my hands together. “I’m going to need you to make that promise again.”

Sierra leaned back in her chair. “If it makes you feel better, I’d do it.”

I smiled, this time genuinely. “I love you so much. I think your boyfriend has competition.”

She chuckled before straightening. “I don’t have a ring on my finger yet, so I can add you to my roster.”

I shook my head, chuckling. “I’m happy to be qualified.”

Sierra flicked her hair and admired her nails dramatically, earning another laugh from me before she burst into laughter herself.

After we sobered up, she cleared her throat. “Arabella?”

aupright, wiping away the tears that had formed from laughing so hard. “Yes?”

She scratched the back of her head, looking uncomfortable.

My smile faded, alarm rising within me. “What’s the problem?”

“You know… um… the man you said I shouldn’t mention?” she asked, looking everywhere but at me.

I nodded cautiously. “Yes?”

Sierra bit her lip. “Just before you came in, Leah said you have to go to his office for a meeting.”
