Inked, my pulse quickening. “Why didn’t you tell me this earlier?” I asked, confused.

I was trying to be strong. And I was going to be, even if it meant suppressing my emotions and refusing to think about everything that had happened between me and him over the last twenty-four hours.
“I’m sorry!” Sierra said, her voice pleading. “I noticed you walked in already in a bad mood, and it seemed like he was the reason.” She lowered her head. “I wanted to make you feel a little better first.”
I rose from my chair. “When is the meeting?”
Sierra stood as well. “I don’t know, but she said someone is expected to come pick you up.”
I frowned. “Why? I can find my way to the company.”
“I said the same thing, but she mentioned something about it being a joint meeting with other companies too.” Sierra walked over to me and loosened the messy bun I’d thrown together that morning.
“Why isn’t Leah going to the meeting herself?” I asked, annoyed.
Sierra raised a brow. “Have you forgotten what he said? All communication goes through you.”
That would’ve made my heart flutter before, but now it only made my stomach sink. “But does that have to apply to everything?”
She ran her fingers through my hair before walking back to her desk to grab a hairbrush from the drawer.
“Not sure,” she said as she brushed my hair. “But I do think they’re scared to test the waters in case it backfires.”
Confused, I frowned. “They?”
Sierra nodded. “Yeah. I overheard some people saying they wished they were the ones who got to go.”
I rolled my eyes. “I’d gladly switch with them if I could.”
Sierra searched my face, and I could tell she had a hundred questions she wanted to ask. Thankfully, she didn’t.
She smiled. “All I did was brush your hair, and now you’re back to looking drop-dead gorgeous.” She turned and headed back to her desk. “It’s honestly not fair.”
“You’re dramatic,” I said just as someone walked into our office.
It was an intern. I didn’t know her name because, after the incident with the last fake intern, I was traumatized.
“Miss Whitmore, the car from the Valerio company is here,” she announced before turning on her heel and leaving.
I grabbed my purse and hurried to the door, mumbling, “I’ve got to go,” to Sierra before dashing off.
As I stepped outside the building, I spotted a black Range Rover waiting by the curb and immediately knew it had to be the car they’d sent.
My suspicion was confirmed when the driver, dressed entirely in black and looking oddly familiar, opened the backseat door for me.
A second later, I realized he was one of the guards I’d seen the night before. “Hi,” I greeted as I got into the car.
He didn’t respond.

Yeah. That confirmed it. He worked for Alvise.
ride was quick and silent, and before long, we arrived at what looked like a luxurious hotel.
After stepping out of the car, I turned to the brooding driver. “Is this where the meeting is taking place?”
He continued walking ahead without replying.

Sighing, I followed behind him. He led me through the lobby, up the elevator, and toward the doors of what looked like a conference room.
The hotel was massive and breathtaking, but I was far too nervous to appreciate any of it. If I had cold feer before, they only got worse the moment I stepped into the conference room.
Alvise sat at the head of the table, as usual, his guards standing behind him. But this time, there were other people in the room. All of them looked important, and judging by the stares directed my way, I was late.
Ignoring the unwanted attention, I walked to the only empty seat available, which happened to be beside a young man. The only person who looked remotely welcoming.
“Hi,” he said. “We meet again.”
I furrowed my brows and turned to look at him properly this time.
My eyes widened. “HR dude?” I asked, surprised.
He was the same guy I’d met in the elevator on my way to Alvise’s office at Velex yesterday.
His eyes twinkled. “HR dude?” He chuckled. “Interesting name.”
I smiled. “Sorry… I don’t know your name.”
He shrugged. “It’s fine. I like it. By the way, my name’s Rick.”
“Nice to meet you… again.” My smile widened. “I’m…”
“I’m sure if you both are done with your personal meeting, you could share the minutes with the rest of us.” Alvise’s ice-cold voice cut through the room, cutting me off.
My smile vanished, and I straightened in my seat, refusing to look up because I could already feel everyone’s eyes on us.
“Sorry, sir,” Rick mumbled.
I kept my mouth shut and stayed quiet with my head lowered for the rest of the meeting, only jotting down the important points.
After it ended, everyone filed out of the room, including Alvise.
Once I was sure they had all left, I let out a tense breath and stood, ready to leave.
“You’re very pretty.”
The voice came from somewhere behind me, startling me. I nearly jumped out of my skin and whipped my head toward
the source.
Rick was sitting in Alvise’s chair now, a smug smile playing on his lips.
“You scared me,” I mumbled, shaking my head. “I had no idea you were still in the room.”

His smile widened, but this time, it didn’t reach his eyes. “You weren’t supposed to know,” he said, the playfulness from earlier completely gone.
rrowed my brows and let out an awkward laugh.
“That’s not a funny joke,” I said as I packed up my notes. “And stop sounding so serious,” I added jokingly, slipping my pen and notepad back into my purse.
He chuckled softly. “Am I scaring you?”
I smiled as I rose to my feet and picked up my purse. “Yeah. A little.” I glanced at him as I walked toward the door. “See you later.”
“Arabella,” he called out, stopping me in my tracks.
I frowned. “Did you just call my name? I never got the chance to tell you my name.”
I turned around, only to find him already standing right behind me. Alarm shot through me, and I instinctively took a step back. “What are you doing?”
A sadistic smile spread across his lips. “You’re not leaving.”
