ARABELLA’S POV

I don’t know who I thought I was to believe I could ask Alvise Valerio to take me home as though it were my right.

I had to be completely out of my mind.

I quickly removed my hands from around his neck and moved to step off his feet, my stomach a fluttering mess as I shook inwardly.

I almost lost my balance in my haste, but before I could stumble, he caught me by the waist, steadying me.

I gasped, startled by the unexpected gesture.

Alvise’s jaw hardened as he lowered his mouth to my ear. “You don’t tell me what to do,” he said, his voice dangerously low.

I’d expected that response, so it didn’t bother me. If anything, I was proud of myself for making the first move.

At the very least, I’d wiped that amused look off his face.

I shrugged his hand off my waist and sidestepped him, intending to walk away, but he caught my wrist and pulled me back until I was standing right in front of him again.

I tugged against his grip, trying to free myself. He didn’t budge. Instead, his hold tightened.

“Let me go,” I huffed, annoyed.

“No,” he replied curtly, then he led me toward a black Mercedes-Benz, unlocked it, and opened the passenger door. “Get in.”

I shook my head. “I thought I don’t tell you what to do?”

He gave me a dry look. “You don’t.”

“So….” I tilted my head. “Where are you taking me?”

“Get in, Arabella,” he gritted out, every trace of amusement gone from his face.

I clenched my jaw but finally let him guide me into the car, his hand still wrapped around my wrist.

Alvise didn’t let go until I was seated. After shutting the door, he rounded the front of the car, slid into the driver’s seat and started the engine, before pulling onto the road.

I turned to look at him. “What did you come to the company to do today?” I blurted, unable to hold it in.

The instant my words registered, I tensed, because it was a question, I’d completely forgotten what he’d said.

Maybe that was the problem. I kept forgetting the things he told me, and somehow, that made it difficult to hold a grudge against him. I bit down on my bottom lip, forcing myself not to say another word.

Alvise glanced at me before returning his attention to the road while I clenched my hands into fists, the silence inside the car slowly getting under my skin.

I hated the no-questions rule. Especially because I had so many questions.

I needed to know how someone who worked for his company had turned out to be a kidnapper. I also wanted to know what had happened the day I’d passed out.
