Behind Closed Doors
ARABELLA’S POV
“W what?” I rasped, shocked by his response.
Alvise didn’t respond. He turned his attention back to the road, dismissing me completely.
I was sure I hadn’t heard him right… Or had I? “I was just kidding,” I said, scratching the back of my head.
That didn’t earn me a response either. I watched, too stunned to utter another word, as his hands rested on the steering wheel, flexing with every turn, his gold wristwatch glinting beneath the passing streetlights.
Whatever shock I’d felt before seemed to double when I turned back to the road and realized it was no fonger familiar.
My stomach fluttered with equal parts anticipation and fear as I settled into the leather seat while Alvise increased his speed now that the roads were less congested.
Was he really taking me to his home?
It felt like some kind of joke… But Alvise didn’t joke.
My head started to throb beneath the weight of my thoughts, so I closed my eyes and tried my best to push away every thought of him and wherever we were headed.
The car slowed, and my eyes fluttered open. I sat up and scanned our surroundings. We had stopped in front of a towering glass high-rise, its sleek exterior gleaming beneath the city lights.
A penthouse.
Of course, Alvise was staying in a penthouse, even if he wasn’t going to be in London for long.
I caught sight of several security guards making their rounds as the car rolled to a stop, and I frowned. Why did he always have security?
Before I could dwell on the question, I turned to look at him, only to find him typing something on his phone.
“Alvise?” I called, demanding his attention.
He looked up, and those piercing blue eyes met mine.
“You really brought me to your house?” I bit my lip. “I thought you were joking.”
He pulled out his key card and tilted his head, giving me a perfect view of his sharply sculpted face.
“Arabella?” he called.
