I cleared my throat. “Yes?”

“I don’t joke,” he said before opening the car door and stepping out.

I climbed out as well, my eyes drifting upward as I took in the beauty of the building. Even from the outside, it carried a dark, intimidating elegance. It was exactly how I’d imagined a place Alvise would live.

I’d completely forgotten about the food he’d bought for me, so leaned into the car, gathered the bags from the seat, and closed the door behind me.

Alvise was already walking ahead, so I hurried after him through the towering glass doors and into a quiet, marble-clad

lobby where the concierge nodded in recognition. Without a word, Alvise led me to a private elevator, tapped his key card against the panel, and the doors slid open.

Hestepped inside first.

With wobbly legs, I followed, and the elevator doors slid shut behind us, sealing us inside a suffocating silence.

I stood rigidly beside him, my eyes fixed on the glowing numbers as they climbed higher and higher. Neither of us spoke.

The only sounds were the low hum of the elevator and the frantic pounding of my own heartbeat. I could feel his presence without even looking at him, and somehow, that made everything worse.

I was struggling… really struggling to keep myself together.

The only comfort I had was the bundle of happiness gathered in my arms. Food.

A soft chime broke the silence as the doors slid open and Alvise stepped out without a word, leaving me no choice bát to follow. My eyes stayed fixed on his back as he walked into the penthouse.

He didn’t stop or look back as he shrugged off his suit jacket before walking farther inside. The silence stretching between us became almost unbearable.

“I need to shower,” I whispered, taking a few hesitant steps forward.

Alvise’s hands paused on the clasp of his wristwatch as he unfastened it. He looked up. “What?”

I frowned. “I said I need a…” I trailed off, my own words finally registering.

Heat rushed to my cheeks, and I buried my face in my palms, unable to hide my embarrassment.

The way I’d said it made it sound like I’d come here for something entirely different.

Composing myself, I looked up and glared at him. “You know exactly what I mean.”

Alvise raised a brow. “I doubt it,” he said before turning away.

I watched, dumbfounded, as he walked past the living room toward a short flight of stairs. He stopped at the foot of them but didn’t look back.

“The guest bedroom is the second door on your left,” he said, his voice clipped. “You’ll find everything you need.” Without waiting for a response, he climbed the stairs and disappeared onto the upper floor.

I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding and followed his directions after setting my food on the kitchen counter.
