In my irritation, I hadn’t noticed the rich aroma filling the kitchen. Did he actually cook that himself… or had he just reheated it?

Watching him eat only reminded me of how hungry I was, but I forced myself to ignore the box of pizza sitting on the kitchen island. I tore my eyes away, refusing to let my own body betray me.

My nostrils flared as I strode over to him and pulled the plate from his hands. “I’m not giving this back until you open the elevator for me, Alvise,” I said, determined. “I’m not your captive.”

He took his time chewing and swallowing before taking another drink of water.

“Drop it,” he said calmly. Far too calmly.

“Why are you being so difficult?” I demanded, walking to the far end of the kitchen before setting his plate down there. All I asked was for…”

I gasped. Before I realized what had happened, Alvise had grabbed my wrist and spun me around to face him. I hadn’t even noticed he’d gotten to his feet.

I looked up to find his eyes darker now, narrowed into thin slits. A muscle ticked sharply in his jaw. “What did I tell you?”

I yanked against his grip, trying to pull free. “I don’t know,” I spat.

His hold tightened, then his hand slid into my hair, gripping a fistful before pulling my head back until I was forced to look up at him.

I shifted uncomfortably on my feet, struggling to free my hair from his grasp. He didn’t let me.

Alvise stepped closer, boxing me in against the sink. “Let’s try that again.” His eyes burned into mine, cold with restrained anger. “What did I tell you, Arabella?”

I bit down hard on my lip, refusing to give him the answer he wanted.

His gaze flickered to my mouth, then his grip tightened.

I gave in. “You said I should drop the plate,” I muttered through clenched teeth.

His breath brushed against my ear as he leaned closer. “And what did you do?”

“I…” My breath snagged in my throat.

Alvise trailed a finger lightly along my neck, barely touching me, yet somehow sending an involuntary shiver through me.
