“Finish your sentence,” he urged, loosening his grip on my hair only slightly.

“I didn’t drop the plate,” I rasped bitterly.

He released my hair, and relief had barely begun to settle before I let out a startled yelp as his hands gripped my waist and lifted me effortlessly.

My hands shot to his shoulders to steady myself as he stepped sideways and set me down on the kitchen counter.

He rubbed his jaw thoughtfully, his expression remaining stoic, though something dangerous flickered behind his eyes as he looked at me.

“I let you get away with a lot of things,” he said, his voice carrying a quiet warning, “but don’t make the mistake of trying to piss me off.” He braced both hands on either side of the counter and leaned in until only a breath separated us. “I don’t like it when people piss me off.”

Alvise’s full attention remained fixed on me, yet there was nothing gentle in his gaze. Nothing warm… Only anger.

The sharp lines of his face seemed even harder now, his jaw clenched so tightly I thought I heard his teeth grind.

After a long moment, he leaned back slightly and pressed his tongue against the inside of his cheek. “Why did you want to leave?”

The question caught me off guard, but I didn’t hesitate. “I will not sleep in your girlfriend’s room.”
