wasn’t good. She might actually go through with her threat and release those… No. She wouldn’t. She couldn’t.

I took a slow breath and unwrapped the burger and fries before forcing myself to eat.

I ate in silence, my thoughts scattered in every direction.

My appetite had disappeared, and I barely managed a few bites, I tried eating the pizza, hoping it would help, but I could only force down two slices before giving up.

I packed everything back into the bag before hopping off the stool and grabbing a carton of orange juice from the refrigerator.

I didn’t want to wake up feeling weak in the middle of the night, so I poured myself a full glass and drank it before pouring another. I just wanted to feel full without having to eat.

When I was done, I grabbed a bottle of water and headed into the guest room, ignoring Alvise completely. I’d felt his eyes following my every movement, but I was too lost in my own thoughts to care.

I picked up a duvet and two pillows before walking back into the living room and settling onto the couch.

I lay down and pulled the duvet over myself, ready to sleep, when I heard footsteps approaching.

“What are you doing?” Alvise asked, his voice firm.

Keeping my eyes closed, I answered, “Trying to sleep.”

“On the couch?” he asked flatly.

Yes.”

“Get up,” he ordered. “You’re not sleeping on my couch.”

“You refused to let me leave, right?” I replied lazily. “Now I’m going to sleep wherever I want.”

Alvise yanked the duvet off me.

I opened my eyes and glared at him. “Now what’s your problem?” I snapped.;

He remained completely unfazed. “There’s a bed inside. My couch isn’t for sleeping.”

A sharp retort sat on the tip of my tongue, but I swallowed it. The urge to argue had drained out of me.
