Something definitely had to be wrong with me. And whatever it was, I was grateful for it because it had given me the courage to look Alvise right in the eye and tell him to leave his own guest room.

When he asked the “what is wrong with you” question, I knew what he meant.

My body language had suddenly changed after he told me Archie knew I was at his house. And I’d also listened to him without arguing like I usually did. It surprised him, and maybe what surprised him even more was the fact that I hadn’t finished eating the food I’d craved so much before letting him drive me to his house.

But he would never understand.

I was scared. Even now, as I stepped out of the bathroom after using mouthwash and washing my face, I was practically shaking.

I tied my hair into a messy bun before unlocking the door. After asking Alvise to leave the night before, I’d locked it the moment he walked out.

It wasn’t that I was afraid of him.

I was just terrified that if he got close enough, he’d see through me and realize the kind of turmoil I was battling inside.

Shaking off my thoughts, I slipped out of the guest room and tiptoed toward the living room. It was five in the morning, and I didn’t want to wake him.

I grabbed my purse from the couch and headed toward the elevator before stopping midway.

“Shit,” I muttered under my breath. I’d completely forgotten about the access card.

Groaning in frustration, I turned around and glanced at the flight of stairs leading to the top floor.

My stomach dipped as I debated going upstairs. His room was up there… And if I wanted to get out of here on time and make it to work, I had to face him now.

Taking a deep breath, I walked to the foot of the stairs before forcing myself to climb them one step at a time. They led to a pair of large double doors.

I let out the breath I’d been holding before knocking, my hands trembling.

There was no response. I knocked again, still nothing. It reminded me of the night of his graduation when I’d gone to his apartment.

I shoved the memory aside and reached for the doorknob before slowly pushing the door open. Just like I’d suspected, it I wasn’t locked.

The room was dimly lit, but the moment I stepped inside, I knew he wasn’t asleep.

I heard movement near the foot of the bed, and when I looked in that direction, the sight that greeted me made my legs feel

weak.

Alvise was shirtless, wearing nothing but a pair of sweatpants as he did push-ups. I stood there, dazed, watching him move up and down with steady precision, never pausing to catch his breath. The only sound in the room was the quiet rhythm of his breathing. There was something eerily calm… and dangerous… about the way he remained completely silent.

“Alvise?” I called softly, my eyes trailing over the muscles flexing across his back.

Wallowed and stepped farther into the room. “Alvise… Good morning,” I said, clearing my throat. “I… I have to go to work.
