He nodded. “Yeah… there’s a meeting I need to prepare for,” he said before turning around and hurrying toward the kitchen island. “Alvise told me he picked you up and took you to his house.”

I scratched the back of my head. “Yeah, he did.”

I’d expected Archie to react somehow, but he looked completely relaxed.

I released a breath I hadn’t realized I’d been holding. Of course, I knew Archie trusted Alvise enough to believe he’d never hurt me, but I’d still been worried he wouldn’t like the idea of his little sister spending the night at his best friend’s house.

My brother shoved a spoonful of scrambled eggs into his mouth. “Francesca told me he was nice enough to drop you off too. I need to call him and thank him. He usually gets to work by six-thirty.”

My smile disappeared. I was right. Francesca had been the one watching from Archie’s room, and she’d wasted no time telling him.

Of course she had.

My stomach sank, dread settling heavily in my chest and leaving a bitter taste in my mouth.

“Yes, he brought me here,” I said. “I need to go get ready for work now. I’m running late.”

“Okay,” Archie said, walking over to pull me into a side hug. “I made scrambled eggs and bacon for you. There’s toast too.
