Seven Days to Goodbye (Irene and Stellan) novel Chapter 22

Chapter 22

Stellan was taken aback, feeling an inexplicable unease in his heart, as if a wanderer unable to find his way home.

His throat felt a bit dry as he asked, Why?

In the past, you always handled these things yourself. Why are you letting me record them this time?

Irene smoothed his furrowed brow, amused by his nervous expression.

What are you thinking? This time I’m accompanying you, so of course you should be the one to record these things.

Stellan let out a barely noticeable sigh of relief.

Yet it seemed as if he was still trying to confirm something, looking into Irene’s eyes as he spoke again.

Is that all?

Even he himself did not realize that his deliberate avoidance had built an invisible wall between them.

Irene held his hand and replied with certainty.

Stellan felt his heart soften and set off to leave.

Before night completely fell, they arrived in Fairbanks, planning to rest for a night before heading to Denali.

By coincidence, they managed to book the same hotel they had once stayed in together.

Irene lay on the soft, large bed, which did not move in the slightest.

She rubbed her stomach, glanced at him sideways with a hint of anticipation, and said, Let’s go have salmon burgers later!

Stellan put down the luggage and smiled indulgently, Alright.

After leaving the hotel, he ordered two salmon burgers, and the taste was just as they remembered.

When it was time to pay, the owner kindly asked, Would you like your salmon burgers to go?

Stellan shook his head, paid, and left with Irene.

The owner, while clearing the table, looked at Stellan’s departing figure with a puzzled expression.

This whole plate wasn’t even touched. What a pity.

They walked together along the bustling street, and Irene sighed helplessly.

I should have let you finish it for me earlier.

The corners of Stellan’s lips curled up, as if he remembered something

amusing.

Did you forget how you used to hate wasting food, so you forced yourself to eat it all, and ended up having to get an injection at night because of a stomachache?

Irene’s cheeks flushed red, and she stood on tiptoe to cover his mouth with her hand.

She looked rather exasperated, Stop talking!

Stellan wrapped his arm around her waist and smiled indulgently, Alright, I won’t say anything more.

As night deepened, the two of them walked close together, their reflections mirrored in each other’s eyes, their breaths gradually mingling.

Stellan’s Adam’s apple bobbed as he slowly lowered his head.

Just as their lips were about to touch, Irene came to her senses and pushed him away.

Stellan, be careful.

She lowered her head, the tips of her ears so red they seemed about to bleed.

Stellan snapped out of his daze and noticed that passersby were looking at him with rather strange expressions.

He cleared his throat, suppressed the awkward feeling, and took Irene’s hand proactively.

We’ve been married for years, I’ll be more careful next time.

Irene glared at him in annoyance, but did not let go of his hand.

They walked together down the street, and Stellan recalled the time five years ago when they came to Alaska.
