Dominic's fury took Daphne by surprise.
It took her a moment to realize what he meant by “they went to a hotel.”
It seemed Dominic still mistakenly believed Preston was one of her club's companions.
So when he didn't see Melanie in her club, his first thought was that she and Preston had gone to get a room.
In reality, Melanie hadn't even been to the club tonight.
Besides, Preston wasn't one of her companions.
Daphne opened her mouth, about to explain.
But then she swallowed her words.
“My, Mr. Hale, throwing your weight around, are we?”
Daphne crossed her arms.
“I'm not telling you. I'd like to see if you actually have the guts to wreck my club!”
Faced with such a defiant Daphne, Dominic fell silent.
He had just been speaking out of anger, making an empty threat.
“Daphne, you're Melanie's best friend. I won't stoop to your level… Just tell me where Melanie is now.”
Seeing Dominic soften his tone, Daphne sneered inwardly.
Pathetic.
If Dominic had dared to actually try and wreck her club, she might have respected him a little more.
“I don't know where Melanie is. She doesn't need to report to me when she takes a companion out to get a room.”
“You…”
Dominic nearly bit his own tongue.
Daphne found his sputtering, wide-eyed expression hilarious.
Since Melanie was planning to divorce Dominic anyway, her reputation in his eyes didn't matter.
Daphne was more than happy to watch Dominic's pride take a hit and see him consumed by jealousy.
So, not only did she not explain, but she embellished the relationship between Melanie and Preston, making Dominic flush with anger.
“What are you two talking about?”
Suddenly, Melanie's voice came from behind them.
Dominic spun around, his eyes wide as if he’d seen a ghost.
Melanie was alone.
