Now that his wish was practically coming true, why did he feel so weird inside?
Miles couldn't articulate the feeling, so he chose to stay completely silent.
"Sylvie, you don't have to keep holding Miles. Let him go play with your brother," Cora suggested.
Sylvie looked down affectionately at the boy. "Miles, do you want to go play?"
Miles scanned the room full of adults, then looked over at the timid Finn standing near the wall. He gave a small nod. "Yeah."
"Alright." Sylvie gently set him down. "Finn is a little younger than you, so make sure you two get along."
She then turned a sterner gaze on Finn. "Finn, make sure you take good care of Miles."
Finn pressed his lips together and nodded. "Let's go play in the yard. I can show you my rocking horse. My sister bought it for me, and it's super fun."
Miles was bored to tears by rocking horses, but he desperately wanted out of this stuffy room. He accepted the invitation.
Finn reached out and took Miles's hand, and the two boys giggled as they ran outside.
The adults smiled, thoroughly pleased by the sight. Miles rarely made friends at school and almost never interacted with other children. Seeing him play so easily with Finn put the Jewell family at ease.
Finn led Miles to a shady corner of the courtyard where a small, wooden rocking horse was parked.
Finn pointed at it proudly. "See? My sister got this for me. I love it so much, I usually don't even want to ride it because I'm scared of breaking it."
Miles didn't give it a second thought. He immediately hopped onto the saddle, rocked back and forth a couple of times, and gave his verdict. "It's just okay. I have an electric one at home. It rocks all by itself."
Miles completely missed the way Finn's face fell. He just kept rocking on the wooden horse, completely in his own world.
"My sister really likes you. She was holding you the whole time," Finn mumbled.
She sprinted out the door, with Herbert and Sylvie right on her heels. Valery, Wade, and the Sinclair parents scrambled up and rushed out after them.
In the courtyard, Miles and Finn were sprawled in the dirt on opposite sides of the overturned rocking horse.
"Miles!" Cora dashed over and scooped him into her arms. She frantically checked him from head to toe, letting out a massive breath of relief when she found no obvious injuries.
She whipped her head around, glaring furiously at Finn. But her sharp reprimand died on her lips when she saw the blood. Finn's elbows and knees were scraped raw and bleeding, looking far worse than anything Miles had sustained. Plus, the Sinclair parents had just reached them, making it awkward for Cora to start yelling.
Elinor hoisted Finn into her arms, gasping in horror. "Oh my goodness! What on earth happened?"
Miles was screaming at the top of his lungs, crying so hard he couldn't form a single word.
Finn, however, was sobbing in broken, hyperventilating gasps. "I... I let him play... with my horse... I don't even play with it myself... But he said my horse... was stupid... And then... then he pushed me..."
