Miles's vicious shove nearly sent Hulda face-first into the floor. She took a massive, stumbling step forward, barely catching her balance. Whipping around, she saw Miles, his teeth bared in absolute fury.
The moment he saw her face, the little boy froze. "Mom..."
Mom. Two utterances of the same word, meant for two entirely different people.
Hulda stared at her son, a chaotic storm of emotions swirling in her chest.
Miles was completely stunned. He never imagined the person he just attacked was his own mother.
Looking at her, his gaze darted away, guilt washing over his features.
Right then, as if seized by a sudden leg cramp, Sylvie let out a pained whimper and clutched her calf.
Miles's attention snapped to her instantly. "Sylvie!"
This time, he didn't call her "Mom"—he reverted to calling her by her name.
He rushed to Sylvie's side, hovering over her with anxious, adult-like concern.
Feeling Hulda's gaze burning into him, his expression grew evasive once again.
Earlier, his grandmother had taken him to the restroom. When they came back, he saw a woman seemingly pushing Sylvie. The woman's back had been to him, so he couldn't see her face.
In the heat of the moment, wanting to protect Sylvie, he had sprinted over, shoved the stranger, and even shouted "Mom" to defend her.
He hadn't expected the stranger to be his actual mother.
Valery marched over, her brow furrowed. "What happened? Sylvie, are you okay?"
Spotting Hulda, Valery's scowl deepened. "Hulda? What are you doing here? What did you do to Sylvie? Are you harassing her?"
Hearing this and seeing Sylvie clutching her leg, whatever guilt Miles felt toward Hulda evaporated instantly.
It was true—his mom was always bullying Sylvie. That's how it had always been, even sending Sylvie to the hospital multiple times before.
