The man's deep eyes flickered. His lips parted slightly, as if he wanted to say something but held back.
Sylvie smoothly stepped forward, slipping her arm affectionately through his. "We were waiting for you to go grab dinner. We ran into Hulda, so I asked her to join us. She might have misunderstood my intentions, so she reacted a bit defensively... It's all a misunderstanding. Please don't blame her."
"Herbert, look how sensible Sylvie is," Valery said, glaring venomously at Hulda.
Herbert glanced at the perfectly well-behaved woman clinging to his arm. After hearing his mother's praise, his gaze shifted back to Hulda.
Just when everyone expected him to mercilessly reprimand Hulda for her lack of manners, just like he always used to, he spoke in an uncharacteristically even tone.
"Since we ran into each other, why don't you eat with us? Miles... hasn't seen you in a long time."
With that, his Adam's apple bobbed, a fleeting, unreadable emotion flashing through his eyes.
Sylvie's pupils constricted. Her flawless mask cracked for a fraction of a second before she expertly pieced it back together.
"Yes, let's eat together, Hulda," she echoed, though the smile on her face and the laugh in her voice sounded audibly strained.
Valery and Cora stared at him in utter disbelief. Both mother and daughter noticed that his attitude toward his ex-wife was entirely different than before.
Miles stood there looking conflicted, staring at Hulda with a messy mix of tentative hope and hesitation.
He wanted to have dinner with his mom, but he was afraid she'd bully Sylvie again.
She hadn't even apologized to her yet!
Hulda had stopped caring about the Jewells' opinions a long time ago. Still, the brutal shove from her own son had undeniably rattled her.
But compared to the first time he had pushed her at that fake wedding, it didn't hurt nearly as much.
Only, the overflowing reservoir of maternal love in her heart grew a few degrees colder.
She leveled a glacial look at Sylvie. Truthfully, a tiny part of her was curious to see what kind of theatrical masterpiece the woman would pull if she actually said yes.
But curiosity aside, she simply wasn't in the mood.
