Nadia hadn't made many public appearances lately. Ever since she got into grad school and successfully became a student under Dr. Brandon Lowe, her days had been filled with endless papers and experiments.
The reason she was working so hard was that she wanted to secure a top-two ranking so she could intern at The Conrad Atherton Institute.
Only by getting into The Conrad Atherton Institute could she truly be considered Brandon's ultimate protégé, and only then could she truly impress her Uncle Bertram.
Finally getting a day off, Nadia had just wanted to get some proper sleep at home. Instead, bright and early, her parents dragged her to the Sterling family's private cemetery.
"Mom, I'm so sleepy. Isn't it too early to pay our respects? Why did we come so soon?" Nadia rubbed her bleary eyes, trailing behind her parents with dragging footsteps.
Leticia handed Nadia a bottle of cold water. "Take a sip, wake yourself up. Your Uncle Bertram comes every year. If we arrive early this year and wipe down both tombstones beforehand, he'll think you're very thoughtful."
"But don't the groundskeepers clean them? Me wiping them just seems redundant." Though Nadia was more than willing to suck up to Bertram, it didn't mean she wanted to do manual labor like cleaning tombstones.
Connor's heavy frame lumbered deeper into the cemetery. As he walked, he told Nadia, "Your mother is right. Your uncle's health is failing year by year, and who knows when he'll step down. These next few years, you need to perform exceptionally well. Making him feel like you're thoughtful and making him depend on you is the right way to go."
Hearing this, Nadia stopped complaining. After taking a sip of the icy water, the lingering sleepiness vanished entirely.
Just as they walked into the cemetery, before they even got close to the tombstones of Audrey and the baby, they spotted an elegant old lady in a black velvet dress standing in the distance.
Behind the old lady stood two tall, professional female attendants.
The old lady had been wiping away tears, but upon hearing footsteps and seeing Nadia's family, the grief on her face vanished instantly.
