Because of that, the grave for Bertram's daughter contained no ashes or remains; it was purely a cenotaph. The tombstone didn't even have a photograph.
Nadia watched Old Mrs. Sheffield's car drive away, her brow furrowing slightly.
Even though she had only caught a brief glimpse, she felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity when looking at Old Mrs. Sheffield's face.
Suddenly, Hulda's face flashed into her mind.
Nadia's eye twitched. To confirm if she was seeing things, she tugged at Leticia's sleeve. "Mom, don't you think Old Mrs. Sheffield's eyes look a lot like that fake's?"
Especially the eyes—they both had deep-set, expressive eyes.
That was one of the things Nadia envied most about the imposter. Nadia's own eyes had inherited the Sterling family's signature hooded shape, making them look small and occasionally puffy.
Thinking of this, Nadia looked at the photo of Audrey on the tombstone.
Oddly enough, Audrey didn't look much like Old Mrs. Sheffield. She must have taken after her father.
Connor had barely seen the old lady a few times in his life, so he had never paid attention to her features.
"But..." He thought for a moment. "Now that you mention it, that girl really does resemble Old Mrs. Sheffield around the eyes."
Leticia's face darkened instantly. "Alright, both of you, stop it. Even if she looks like her, she is not a Sterling. Nadia, remember this: you are the only legitimate young lady of the Sterling family."
"Don't bring up that girl ever again, especially not in front of your uncle. He hates her guts; bringing her up will only annoy him." Leticia shoved a brand-new towel into Nadia's hands. "Enough talking. Your uncle will be here soon. Even if you're just putting on a show, go wipe the tombstones a few times."
Nadia dropped the subject of whether the fake resembled Old Mrs. Sheffield.
