Nadia's grip on the towel tightened, as if she were strangling Hulda instead of holding a piece of cloth.
"Why are you all here so early?" Bertram's voice calling from a distance interrupted Nadia's thoughts.
Seeing Bertram looking at her, she immediately hid the hostility in her eyes, instantly morphing back into the image of an obedient, hardworking niece.
"Uncle Bertram!" she called out sweetly, then glanced behind him.
Seeing that Bertram had come alone and Caspian wasn't with him, she felt a flicker of surprise.
Connor's family tacitly agreed not to mention running into Old Mrs. Sheffield. After all, Old Mrs. Sheffield despised Bertram, and the Sheffield family had completely severed ties with the Sterlings.
Bringing them up now would only cause Bertram unnecessary grief.
From a distance, Bertram had already seen Nadia scrubbing his late wife's tombstone diligently.
Whether her actions were genuine or an act, he was still warmed by the sight.
He walked up to the tombstone, his eyes slightly red, and patted Nadia on the shoulder. "Nadia, that's very thoughtful of you."
Connor and Leticia had guessed right—seeing Nadia clean the tombstone personally had indeed moved Bertram.
Nadia felt a surge of secret delight, though her face remained somber and sorrowful. "I know Aunt Audrey and my little cousin mean a lot to you. I've never done anything for them before, so this is the least I can do to show my respects."
Bertram nodded, his eyes tearing up. He took the towel from Nadia's hands and began personally wiping his wife and daughter's tombstones.
