Come to think of it, she really ought to thank that dead baby.
If the child hadn't died so early, how else would she have become the perfect replacement?
Nadia stared at the tombstone, a trace of imperceptible smugness hidden beneath the sorrow in her eyes.
Don't worry, I'll gladly take your place. I'll take wonderful care of Uncle Bertram, and wonderful care of the entire Sterling family.
...
"Achoo!"
Just as she got off the plane and was waiting for her luggage, Hulda sneezed without any warning.
Seeing this, Abby Corbett quickly asked in concern, "Ms. Atherton, are you catching a cold?"
Hulda sniffled and shook her head. "No, my nose just suddenly got itchy."
Super itchy—the kind of itch that made a sneeze impossible to hold back.
Immediately after, she uncontrollably let out another sneeze.
Abby watched Hulda pinch her nose and laughed. "Two random sneezes in a row. Someone must be missing you or talking about you."
Hulda pulled her suitcase off the carousel. "You actually believe in nonsense like that?"
Abby's luggage happened to be right behind Hulda's. As she grabbed her bag, she argued back, "How is it nonsense? The highest form of science is spirituality. It's totally grounded in facts."
Hulda pulled up the handle of her suitcase and shot Abby a look. "With an attitude like that, please don't tell anyone you're my assistant."
Abby laughed out loud, pulling up her own suitcase handle and following right behind.
By this time, Dr. Lynch and Caleb Warren had also collected their bags. Once the group gathered, they prepared to catch a taxi to the high-speed rail station.
