As she spoke, she stepped closer, wanting Katherine to see her clearly.
But the child kept shaking her head and backing away, struggling for a long moment before finally forcing out, "Dirty, smelly..."
Hulda froze. She watched the child desperately try to drag the heavy bag behind her back, trying to put as much distance between them as possible.
She finally realized that the child felt she was too filthy and smelly, which was why she didn't want Hulda to come close.
"It's okay, I don't mind," Hulda said softly.
But little Katherine kept shaking her head and backing up. "Don't want you to get dirty."
Seeing the immense restraint the child showed in keeping her distance, Hulda finally let out a soft sigh. "Alright, I won't come closer. Where do you live now? Can you show me?"
The little one hesitated, biting her lower lip and lowering her head in silence.
Hulda knew the child was afraid of getting scolded by Mrs. Gable.
"Don't be afraid, Katherine. I just want to see where you're staying. I won't let your grandmother yell at you. I'll talk to her," she urged softly. For some reason, she simply couldn't bring herself to ignore this little girl.
Little Katherine looked up at Hulda, eventually nodding. "Okay."
Then, dragging the trash-filled bag, she slowly shuffled forward to lead the way.
Hulda really wanted to help the child carry the heavy bag, but she knew Katherine would never allow it.
She nodded a quick goodbye to the tall, thin man, then followed behind Katherine, leaving the primary school behind.
She followed Katherine all the way to the temporary housing area where the displaced residents had been centralized.
Staying at the primary school hadn't been a long-term solution, especially since the new school semester was starting soon.
