Faced with Mrs. Gable's harsh interrogation, Katherine lowered her head, anxiously grabbing at her dirty, tattered clothes.
Seeing this, Hulda hurried forward. From her bag, she pulled out the new clothes she had bought for Katherine, as well as a bag of crackers and bread.
"Please don't misunderstand, I don't mean any harm. I just bought some clothes and food for Katherine before I came, so I wanted to drop them off." Hulda knew Mrs. Gable was deeply hostile to outsiders, so she deliberately kept a respectful distance.
Seeing that Mrs. Gable still looked furious, Hulda continued, "Katherine's clothes are falling apart. She's a growing girl, you can't just let her walk around in rags. There are new clothes in this bag for her to change into. I'll just leave these here and go. I won't bother you."
Hulda set the bag of clothes and the food on the ground a fair distance from the old woman and the child. Then, she politely stepped back.
Mrs. Gable stared at Hulda for a long time. Finally, she lunged forward, snatched up the clothes and food, and hurriedly unlocked the door. "Katherine, what are you standing there for? Get inside!"
Katherine stood at the door, staring at Hulda, hesitating and refusing to go in.
"I said get inside!" Mrs. Gable leaned out, grabbed Katherine roughly by the arm, and yanked her inside, slamming the door shut with a heavy thud.
Hulda stood outside staring at the closed door for a while. Every time she saw Katherine, a wave of bitterness washed over her heart.
That lingering feeling left her in low spirits the entire walk back to the guesthouse.
With her head down, she trudged forward gloomily. But just as she walked through the guesthouse gates, she slammed face-first into a tall, solid chest that felt like a brick wall.
Hulda let out a yelp of pain, clutching her throbbing nose as she stumbled back a step, finally getting a clear look at the person.
Caspian Sterling stood in the courtyard of the guesthouse, looking at her with a teasing smirk. "Hulda, are you blind? Do you not look where you're going? Is that how I taught you?"
