She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 309

For a moment, Herbert was at a loss for words. Finally, he let out a bitter, helpless laugh. "Hulda, be reasonable. I run a tech company. How could I possibly give you such a pathetic allowance?"

He sighed heavily, continuing. "That amount wasn't even enough to cover Callie's salary. If you didn't have enough money, why didn't you say anything? Why did you keep quiet and drain your own savings to keep the house running?"

Hulda switched the phone to her other ear, her emotions entirely composed.

This felt like the first time since their messy divorce proceedings began that they were actually having a calm, rational conversation.

"You're overthinking it. Back then, I wasn't 'keeping quiet' or suffering in silence. I didn't feel wronged," Hulda said, expressing her genuine mindset at the time. "To me, it was my home. I never believed that a household should rely solely on a man for financial support. I poured my resources into our family because I wanted to, without expecting anything in return."

At least, that was who she used to be.

Herbert's breathing hitched again over the line.

Hulda continued, "Besides, it wasn't like I couldn't afford a few household bills."

During those seven years, Hulda hadn't held a traditional job, but she had substantial savings. Between publishing academic papers and taking on complex simulation projects from home, her income had been quite lucrative.

Herbert let out a hollow chuckle. "Right. I almost forgot. You're a brilliant inventor. Hulda..."

Just then, a knock echoed from her door, followed immediately by Caspian's lazy, velvety drawl. "Hulda. I'm hungry."

Herbert went dead silent.

When he finally spoke, his voice was laced with ice. "Why is there a man outside your door? Who is it? Is it Caspian? Are you living with him? We barely just finalized the divorce, and you're already throwing yourself at someone else?!"
