"Do you seriously survive on this kind of junk?" Caspian frowned, eyeing the pastry with overt disgust.
He tossed it onto the desk and turned toward the bed.
Halfway there, he paused, then doubled back.
He picked it up, tore open the wrapper, hesitated for a fraction of a second, and took a bite.
The heavy taste of artificial flavoring, sugar, and butter instantly coated his tongue. It only took him three or four bites to finish the whole thing.
He raised an eyebrow, a faint smirk tugging at his lips.
The lingering sweetness wasn't entirely awful.
Actually, it was pretty good.
The next morning.
The team needed to install equipment for the new base station. Since the initial setup required some heavy lifting, Dr. Lynch and the other guys had headed up the mountain early.
When Hulda and Abby walked out of the project guesthouse, fully prepped for the day, they spotted Dylan waiting in the courtyard.
"Good morning, Ms. Atherton!" Dylan greeted her with a bright, eager smile.
"Morning," Hulda replied politely. As she walked past him, she paused. "Make sure you get your boss some decent food. I'd hate for him to get hungry in the middle of the night and start bothering people."
Without waiting for Dylan to process that, she walked off with Abby.
