Seeing the little girl running so desperately that she lost her shoe just because she was worried about her, a profound warmth blossomed in Hulda's chest.
"I'm fine. I'm so sorry I made you worry." She reached out to take Katherine's shoe to help her put it on.
But the child yanked it out of reach. Upon confirming Hulda was safe, Katherine abruptly spun around and sprinted away.
"Katherine!" Hulda took a few steps after her, but the girl had already vanished into a narrow alleyway.
Abby sighed softly. "Director, that kid really cares about you. She's such a sweet girl; it's a tragedy she lost her parents so young. If they were still around, they'd probably treat her so well."
Hulda listened silently, offering no response.
It was true that Mrs. Gable was neglectful, but Katherine's parents hadn't been good people either.
Hulda had asked Desmond about them. Katherine's parents had been lazy deadbeats who refused to work. During their years away, they got mixed up with bad crowds. If they hadn't, debt collectors wouldn't be showing up at Mrs. Gable's door every other week.
As Hulda's thoughts lingered on Katherine and the child's uncertain future, her phone rang.
She glanced at the caller ID, a flicker of surprise crossing her face.
It was Miles.
However, it only rang twice before it abruptly disconnected, long before she could answer.
Hulda stared at the screen for a few seconds. Eventually, driven by maternal instinct, she dialed back.
After three rings, the line connected. Miles's childish, bratty voice came through. "I accidentally pressed the button. I didn't want to call you."
Hulda nodded calmly. "Alright, I understand. If you don't need anything, you can hang up."
"I..." Miles sounded haughty. "I'm not doing anything right now. I guess I can talk to you."
Hulda smiled faintly. Even though she didn't have custody, she still felt an obligation to check on his well-being. "How have you been lately?"
In his room, Miles pouted. "I'm doing great. Sylvie loves me very much."
Now, whenever Miles mentioned Sylvie, Hulda felt absolutely nothing.
"That's good to hear," she replied simply.
Through the receiver, she could hear the sound of him chewing.
