She Quit Her Family and Found Herself novel Chapter 333

Hulda didn't notice Caspian's shifting emotions. She simply froze for a moment after hearing his words.

This wasn't the first time someone had said Katherine resembled her, which only solidified the plan forming in her mind.

Instead of heading into the guesthouse, she went to the neighboring town hall to find Desmond Miller, asking him to accompany her to Mrs. Gable's house.

As soon as they arrived, they saw Katherine standing by the door of the makeshift house, expertly sorting through trash.

The door was open, and Mrs. Gable's voice drifted out. "Why have you been running around so much these past few days? I can never find you. Did you go looking for that city woman again?"

Katherine's hands paused in their sorting. "No... no... Gran..."

Clearly, the little one wasn't good at lying. Already struggling with her speech, she stumbled over her words even more now.

"Katherine, I told you, people from the outside are bad, especially the ones from the big cities. They're wicked. Have you forgotten the people who came to the house to collect debts, beating us and smashing things?"

Katherine's body trembled slightly. "No..."

She would never forget. Those people were terrifying.

"Good. Just remember, you're a child of these mountains, and you always will be. Don't think for a second that just because those people treat you a little nicely and give you some food and clothes, they're good people. She doesn't genuinely care about you. She has her own family, her own kids. When she leaves, she'll forget all about you. You're dirty, smelly, and ugly. Who would like you? I'm the only one who will ever want you, understand?"

From inside the shack, Mrs. Gable's low, ghostly voice echoed out, followed by a few rough coughs.

Hulda and Desmond arrived just in time to hear this.

Desmond furrowed his brow deeply. "Why is this old lady telling the kid things like that?"
