This was the first time Herbert had ever slapped Miles across the face. Even on the rare occasions he disciplined the boy, it had only ever been a light pat on the back or his bottom. The force had never been heavy enough to actually hurt; it was just meant as a deterrent.
But this time...
Miles had been treated like a little deity by the Jewell family since he was born. This was his first real slap.
He didn't process it immediately. He stood frozen for a few seconds. As the stinging, burning pain bloomed across his cheek, he finally clutched his face and let out a blood-curdling wail.
"Mr. Jewell..."
"Sir!"
Sylvie and Callie gasped in unison. Neither of them had expected him to actually strike the boy across the face.
"Ahhh! I hate you, Dad! I hate you, Sylvie! I want my mom! I want Mom! Mom!" Miles sobbed hysterically, gasping for air as he clutched his burning cheek.
Hearing his son crying out for his mother brought another wave of intense irritation crashing over Herbert. The mere thought of Hulda was maddening.
He looked up at the nanny. "Callie, take him to his room. Let him reflect on what he's done, and no one is to speak to him!"
With that order, Herbert stood up and stormed into his study.
In stark contrast to the chaos in the Jewell household, Hulda was experiencing perfect tranquility out in the mountains.
The day after she struck a deal with Mrs. Gable, she used Desmond to tally up the exact total of the family's outstanding debts. She then transferred the funds directly into a designated town government account he provided.
From there, a town clerk would handle paying off all the creditors on their behalf.
This had been Desmond's suggestion. For one, the government's involvement would deter the aggressive debt collectors. For another, it severed any direct link between the creditors and Hulda, shielding her from future harassment.
