"Enough. Don't take it out on Sylvie just because of what the police said yesterday. She works full-time, just like I do. I've been drowning in work lately, and she's been just as busy. When would she have had the time to take Miles out? Besides, that's what Callie is here for." Herbert let out a heavy sigh, his bloodshot eyes showing the toll of a sleepless night. "Right now, the only thing that matters is finding Miles."
"Herbert, this is your fault too! Miles is just a little boy! Even if he made a mistake, you should have just scolded him. How could you slap him across the face?! He's never been hit a day in his life!" Valery snapped, her eyes red with tears as she laid into her son.
They had only found out the full truth from the police later on. Not only had Herbert harshly disciplined Miles that night and ordered him to his room, but he had actually slapped the boy.
When Cora heard that her brother had struck him, she immediately blew up. With red eyes, she had demanded to know what gave him the right to strike a child.
Facing his mother's reprimand now, Herbert was filled with crushing regret. He regretted being so brutally harsh on the boy; that was the exact reason Miles had run away.
"I was just so angry. That trophy meant everything to Director Chambers, and my promotion to full professor is entirely in his hands. The worst part was that Miles refused to admit what he did and tried to blame it all on Finn. I just lost control..."
If he had known it would lead to this, he would have done anything to keep his temper in check that night...
But he honestly didn't even know what was wrong with himself lately. He had just been so unbearably irritable.
"Herbert!" Cora stood up, her eyes blazing. "If anything happens to Miles, you'll regret it for the rest of your life!"
