"Oh my god! Why is he in a hospital?!" Valery clamped a hand over her mouth, stumbling backward as her mind instantly spiraled to the worst-case scenario.

Wade looked equally horrified, turning deathly pale as he clutched at his chest.

But out of everyone, Cora's reaction was by far the most extreme.

The moment those words came through the speaker, she completely broke down. "Miles! Is my Miles dead?! Miles! My boy is dead!"

Herbert's knuckles turned white around his phone, his entire arm trembling violently as a crushing wave of remorse swallowed him whole.

"Enough! Everyone, shut up!" Hulda's voice cut through the hysterical panic, ringing out with crystal clarity.

She snatched the phone straight out of Herbert's shaking hand. The line was still open. "Officer, which hospital is he at? Is his life in danger?"

The officer on the other end sounded a bit exasperated by the family's screaming but didn't waste a second, immediately giving her the name of the facility.

"The kid is alive. He's in surgery right now, but you need to get over here immediately!"

Hulda hung up and tossed the phone right back at Herbert's chest. "Get to the hospital. Now."

Her decisive command acted like a stabilizing anchor, snapping the hysterical Jewell family out of their spiral and giving them a focal point.

Even Cora, who had literally just been screaming obscenities at her, obediently spun around to grab her purse before scrambling out the front door after her parents.

Herbert caught his phone, his dark eyes locked intensely onto Hulda.
