She Turned Her Grief Into Wings novel Chapter 130

"I said I've got it."

He ended the call just as the nurse pressed a piece of gauze to his arm and smoothly removed the needle.

"All done, sir."

Caden held the pressure bandage for a moment before rolling his sleeve back down.

When he stepped out, Aiken was pacing the hallway, instantly rushing over to hand him his suit jacket.

"Mr. Hayes, you really need to eat something. You've skipped meals all day and you just gave a massive amount of blood. You're going to pass out."

"I'm fine."

With Shera's life hanging in the balance on an operating table, food was the last thing on his mind.

His phone buzzed again. Caller ID: Dewitt Hayes.

Caden's jaw tightened. He instantly rejected the call and flipped the phone to silent.

He simply didn't have the emotional bandwidth to deal with his father's corporate lectures right now.

"What's the status on the manhunt?"

Aiken hesitated, looking deeply uncomfortable. "Our teams located the suspect's vehicle abandoned on the outskirts of the city. We've hauled it in for forensics."

He paused, his eyes dropping to the floor. "But the driver fled on foot. We're running grid searches now. The traffic cameras confirm it was a female driver."

"She was wearing a heavy mask, so we don't have facial recognition yet. It's going to take a little more time to pull a definitive ID."

"The only good news is that the police found significant blood inside the driver's side cabin. The suspect is heavily injured."

Caden's eyes narrowed into lethal slits.

A female driver...

His mind immediately locked onto one specific name.

"Find out exactly where Helga Sutton was today. Every location. Every person she spoke to."

Aiken froze for a split second before nodding sharply.

Just as Aiken turned to leave, his own phone rang. It was Dewitt.

"Mr. Hayes... it's your father."

Caden glanced at the screen and said absolutely nothing.

Aiken understood immediately, letting the phone ring out into silence.

Caden leaned forward, pressing Shera's icy knuckles against his cheek, desperately trying to warm them with his own skin.

"Shera, I'm sorry. God, I'm so damn sorry."

His eyes burned with overwhelming remorse. "Just wake up. Tell me what to do, and I'll do it. Whatever you want."

"I swear to God, I am going to rip the truth out of the Suttons, and I am going to destroy whoever did this to you. Just please, stay with me."

"Do you hear me, Shera?"

Outside, the biting wind lashed against the glass. Inside, the dim amber light washed over the room.

The woman in the bed didn't stir, her eyes remaining stubbornly closed.

Caden kept his vigil by her side through the entirety of the night, refusing to close his eyes for even a second.

The only interruptions were the silent nurses slipping in to check her vitals or adjust her IV lines.

It wasn't until the first pale streaks of dawn broke across the windowpane that a soft knock came at the door.

Caden gently tucked Shera's hand back under the blankets and stepped quietly out into the hall.

"Mr. Hayes," Aiken said breathlessly. "We found the driver."
