When Shera opened her eyes, all she saw was a stark white ceiling.
She blinked, letting her vision focus as her senses slowly returned.
She tried to move, but a violent surge of pain wracked her body, making her clench her jaw tightly.
As her thoughts unscrambled, she gradually remembered what had happened.
She remembered being tailgated by a maniac, getting sideswiped, crashing into a barrier, and then... nothing.
In her hazy state, she thought she heard someone calling out, "Shera."
Her throat felt like sandpaper, and the upper half of her body was entirely immobile. Using all her strength, Shera turned her head to the side.
A sharp pain in her chest forced a muffled groan from her lips, startling Xenia, who had been sleeping with her head resting on the edge of the bed.
She gasped. "Baby, you're finally awake."
Xenia stood up, staring at her pale, battered face.
Suddenly, her nose stung, and massive tears began to roll down her cheeks once more.
Her quiet tears quickly turned into full-blown wailing. "You're finally awake! I was so scared I was going to lose you!"
"I heard you were in an accident and rushed right over, only to find you lying here wrapped in bandages like a mummy."
"God, I... I was terrified, Shera."
Xenia clutched her hand, sobbing uncontrollably. Her eyes, which had barely recovered from her last crying fit, were completely red again.
Shera looked at her best friend, the corners of her lips turning up in a weak smile as she weakly twitched her fingers, wanting to wipe Xenia's tears away.
"I'm... fine."
The heavy pressure in her upper chest prevented her from speaking normally, allowing only a frail whisper to slip out.
Xenia hurriedly wiped her face, suddenly remembering she needed to call the doctor.
She pressed the call button, and shortly after, the department head and the attending physician rushed in with their team.
The large group of medical staff momentarily overwhelmed Shera, but she complied as they ran a full set of check-ups.
"Breath sounds are still slightly weak, and there are a few bubbles in the chest drain."
The department head gave a few more instructions, assuring her that nurses and doctors would check on her regularly and telling her not to stress.
The hospital staff would accommodate her needs in whatever way they could.
Once the medical team had left, Xenia sat back down at the bedside.
Seeing that Shera's lips were parched, she used a thin straw to help her sip some water.
Watching Shera struggle just to take a drink broke Xenia's heart all over again.
"Baby, does it hurt a lot?"
Shera shook her head gently and asked Xenia to elevate the top half of the bed.
Once settled, she asked, "What exactly happened at the end?"
It had all happened so fast; she had blacked out before she could even process it.
The mere mention of it made Xenia grind her teeth in fury.
"It was that bitch, Rosalie Kerr. Since she got kicked out of the competition, her life went down the drain. With the finals coming up, the internet trolls dragged her back into the spotlight to tear her apart. She got bitter, tracked you down, and rammed your car."
