She Turned Her Grief Into Wings novel Chapter 134

"What's even more sickening is she pulled a hit-and-run! The cops finally tracked her down in the outskirts of town. She's locked up in a cell right now, waiting for the legal system to chew her up."

Shera's eyelashes fluttered as she absorbed the news. "Is that so."

"If you ask me, someone like that deserves the death penalty. That was straight-up murder—attempted murder, at the very least!"

Knowing Shera had just woken up, Xenia forced herself to dial back her blazing rage, not wanting to distress her best friend.

But a second later, all the fight went out of her.

She looked at the battered woman in the bed, her shoulders slumping. "If only I had been there. Why did I have to leave?"

Her voice dripped with guilt. "Why is it that every time you're in danger, I'm never by your side?"

Seeing tears threatening to spill again, Shera feigned annoyance.

"And what exactly would your presence have changed? She would have rammed the car anyway, and then we'd both be lying here in matching hospital gowns."

Xenia pouted, her voice dropping to a mumble. "Well, at least it would've been two against one. Our odds would've been better."

Shera let out a soft breath and reached out to hold Xenia's fingertips.

"This had nothing to do with you. If it didn't happen last night, it would've happened somewhere else, at some other time."

"Stop trying to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders, and stop blaming yourself for things outside of your control."

It wasn't the first time Shera had to say this. Whether it was now, the last incident, or back when they were in school, Xenia always tore herself apart over the misfortunes of those she loved.

Shera wondered if it was because Xenia's parents had shipped her off to Aurelia while keeping her younger brother close, leaving Xenia with an ingrained people-pleaser complex.

Wanting to change the subject, Shera asked, "Since I'm awake now, haven't the cops or the traffic division come by to ask questions?"

Usually, the authorities would take a statement as soon as the victim was conscious.

"Caden Hayes already dug through that psycho's background with a fine-tooth comb. The police combed through all the security footage from the past few days, and combined with Rosalie's confession, there's nothing left for you to add."

"Caden?"

Xenia nodded. "Yeah. He rushed over the second he heard about the crash. He stayed in your room all night and headed straight to the police precinct at the crack of dawn."

"I even heard from the nurses that he gave you blood."

Both men were there for the exact same reason.

Deputy Chief Frank Larson couldn't stop wiping the sweat from his forehead. He had just managed to politely usher one titan out the door, only for another to show up.

What a troublesome woman to have locked in his precinct. If he'd known this would happen, he would have transferred her to Central Police Command straight away.

Frank had spent some time in Port City years ago, so he was well aware of the terrifying reach of the Sinclair family.

"Did someone just leave?"

Rhys cut straight to the chase, his expression icy.

"Yes, sir. Mr. Caden Hayes was just here... also regarding this case."

"And what did he have to say?"

Frank set a cup of tea on the desk and hurriedly closed his office door.

"Mr. Hayes personally went in to see the suspect. Honestly, it was like magic. We couldn't pry a single word out of her, but less than twenty minutes with him and she spilled her guts."
